BRETON DE NIJS Faded Portraits Trans. Donald and Elsje Sturtevant Amherst: The University of Massachusetts Press, 1982. Its opening chapter de-scribes the death in 1940 of the sixty-year-old Sophie de Pauly, the aunt of the first-person narrator, E. de Nijs (pseudonym of Rob Nieuwenhuys). In the following chapters, through the technique of flash-backs, the narrator describes the life of Aunt Sophie-her frustrated longing for love, her failure to preserve the "purity" of the family. In short, when de Nijs's aunts, uncles and parents "were alive, they represented a dying class.

Edward Lewis Sturtevant (January 23, 1842 – July 30, 1898) was an American agronomist and botanist who wrote Sturtevant's Edible Plants of the World. An enormously prolific author, he was considered one of the giants of American agricultural science in his own time. Lewis Sturtevant was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 23, 1842, to Lewis W. Sturtevant (descendant of a family of Puritan ancestry) and Mary Haight (Legett) Sturtevant

However, this out of print book is also somewhat out of date. The Latin names and names of Families are often changes as more knowledge is gained to better classify plants. One book which should be in print for some time and is far superior in many many ways is "Cornucopia II: A source Book of Edible Plants.

A fictionalized memoir of family life in former colonial Dutch East Indies, Faded Portraits is the story of the once powerful DePaulys, and especially of Aunt Sophie, the matriarch, whose efforts to preserve the family heritage- the "purity" of the Dutch bloodline and culture- prove inevitably tragic. The forms to which aunt Sophie clings, and which she seeks to impose on her family, represent an arrogant blindness to the personal needs of others and to the cruelties of the colonial system, and underscore the struggles of displaced people who must accept the eclipse of their way of life. The book is reminiscent of the literature of the American South- of the novels of William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, John Crowne Ransom, Robert Penn Warren. That too was "colonial" literature, wistfully determined to record an era that was passing.
