Bonheur d'occasion book . The book was originally written in French, but my translation is so good, that I found it hard to believe it wasn't written in English. Gabrielle Roy has marvelous powers of description that make winter wind, snow, cold and choking city smoke descend and engulf the reader as well as her fictional characters. Just as invasive are her powers of discernment which take the reader right inside the thoughts and desperation of a family caught inside the slums of Montreal during the depression that preceded world war two.

Le Pays de bonheur d'occasion. Select Format: Paperback. ISBN13:9782764600740. Release Date:February 2001. Translation of Rue Deschambault. The eighteen stories in Gabrielle Roy’s Street of Riches centre upon the bittersweet experiences of a young girl growing up in the francophone community of St. Boniface, Manitoba. In the persona of her narrator Christine, Roy transfigures the incidents and characters of her own childhood, reflecting with gentle irony upon her youthful awakening to the beauty and the sorrow of life.

There are two French versions of Bonheur d'occasion. Her translation of Gabrielle Roy's autobiography, translated into English as Enchantment and Sorrow was awarded the Governor General's Award in 1987. The first was published in 1945 by Société des Éditions Pascal in two volumes. This version was translated in 1947 by Hannah Josephson, who removed several short passages from the English version. In 1965, Librairie Beauchemin published an abridged French version eliminating a number of passages.

The novel by the Manitoba-born author appeared in June 1945 and was a great success in Quebec as soon as it was released.
