E-book Extra Third, I wanted to create a small town. The Passions of Chelsea Kane was the first book where I consciously did that

A Note from the Author on The Passions of Chelsea Kane. She fought a compelling urge to push. Third, I wanted to create a small town. The Passions of Chelsea Kane was the first book where I consciously did that. I drove through southern New Hampshire until I found a town that captured the intimacy I wanted, then I used it as a physical model for my own. I have since done this numerous times - most notably in Lake News and Three Wishes. Part of me does find solace in the simplicity and intimacy of small town living, which is perhaps why my husband and I love our lake house!

The book is about Chelsea Kane, a very successful architect, who owns her own architectural firm with her best friend Carl Harper. Chelsea and Carl's parents hope that Chelsea and Carl will marry. Chelsea and Carl try to make a go of it but they really are best friends who don't want to marry. I didn't want the book to end! I could really relate to the characters.

This book is not one of Barbara Delinsky's finest but it did keep my interest.

Chelsea is also adopted. Her adopted mother has past away and Chelsea decides to find her birth mother. She ends up in the small town of Norwich Notch after finding out that her birth mother lived there. Chelsea is not accepted warmly in the small town.

My only hesitation with The Passions of Chelsea Kane is that the small town of Norwich Notch seems like a throwback to the 1800's. The people in the town are not accepting of Chelsea because she is pregnant out of wedlock. This book takes place in the nineties and I don't think that many small towns in the U. S. at that time would have been unwelcoming to a single mom.

It's a good Barbara Delinsky novel but not one of her best.

This book was set in modern time, published 2009 but has the interesting dichotomy of much older mind sets and yet modern thinking too. The townspeople lead you to believe they're not modern, in fact, they are very modern and up to date. Chelsea Kane wanted to find her birth parents after the death of her loving adoptive Mother. With major resentment from her adoptive father and her then best friend Carl, her strong character leads her to a small parochial town run by selectmen of questionable character. Chelsea is strong, and refuses to be threatened even when crummy things keep happening to her. Fortunately, she has wealth and is not dependent on anyone except herself. As the novel rolls forward, the characters become more and more interesting in how they react to Chelsea and her pregnancy as well as reactions of others in town. At the beginning of the novel, I wasn't so sure but again, as it unfolded, I became intrigued with the character development and liked almost all of them. It wasn't particularly obvious at first what the outcome might be … all the more good reading. this novel did the job of sticking with me enough to write this review. Most typically, I do not do reviews. Thanks Barbara Delinsky for this good novel.
DEAD-SHOT
I've loved so many of your books, Barbara Delinsky, but this may be my fave so far ! I don't know how I've missed reading this one.
I've read so many I've way lost track.
You have such a way of creating interesting characters and drawing us into their lives ! Thank you for that. I look fwd to reading many more of your books !
I won't tell about the story, as it's been gone over many times, but it's wonderful.
ADDITION ~~~I read the book sometime ago, thought it excellent. Was So excited to listen on Audible. So now, I'm at the end of the first chapter, I can barely barely tolerate the narrator (Johanna Parker)! She talks too intensely, sds like she's mad about someth! HOW can I tolerate this to the end?! I did listen to the sample, as have got accid into Audible's before and couldn't take the narrator. The sample seemed "ok". I don't know if I'll try to go further or stop. DARN! Beware of Johanna Parker! Johanna, if you see this, please slow down and add softness to your speaking!

Loved this book. Found myself getting attached to the characters in the book. Ms. Delinsky has a real talent for painting the characters so that you feel you know them and they become part of your family. I didn't want to put the book down!

This is such a great story. I've read this story so many times. Chelsea spends her life looking for the truth about herself and along the way she meets people that she instinctively connects with. Along the way she builds relationships and falls in love. I especially love her relationship with Judd. He is so dependable and caring but stoic about it all. This is a great message on how when you are looking for yourself sometimes you have to be brave and take chances.
