Miss Julia is a proper lady of a certain age with a backbone of iron and perfect steel magnolia poise, not to mention the sharpest tongue south of the Mason-Dixon line. But she's feeling a little wistful when Hazel Marie, once her late husband's paramour and now her best friend, prepares to move out and live in sin with that nice Mr. Pickens. And she's taking Little Lloyd, the apple of Ms. Julia's eye, with her!

But suddenly, to her delight, a wedding is in the offing. Handsome Deputy Sheriff Coleman Bates and attorney Binkie Enloe announce their plan to run down to the courthouse next week and tie the knot. But Miss Julia (who knows cucumber sandwiches are correct in summer and ham biscuits in winter) insists that's not the way to do it. Taking a few shortcuts in etiquette, she decides to organize a real ceremony herself Will Little Lloyd sing a solo? Will anybody notice the sparkling grape juice isn't champagne? These and other hilarious hurdles on the way to the altar reinforce Miss Julia's undying motto: if you want something done right you have to do it yourself.

I've read 4 of the Miss Julia books. The 1st in the series was wonderful. The last one (published this year) was dreadful. The 2nd book in the series was okay. This third falls on the dreadful side. Everything is frenetic. Too much going on at once -- a wedding that might not come off, a petty thief on the loose, a weird gathering across the street from Miss Julia's house (that takes her forever to investigate), and way too many dumb characters. The book doesn't work on any level. And although this was a new book, every-other right-hand page had a wrinkle in it -- obviously from the printer. This will be the last time I read Miss Julia.

That woman wears me out. I'm just glad it's her and not me. She's a good woman, has good intentions but can she ever find problems or do they just follow her and wait to pounce. Great characters in Ms. Ross' books and I love that and they are never slow or boring. Just go with Ann Ross & Julia and find yourself entertained. Enjoy the ride--they're off again. Don't miss it!!!. The only one I was disappointed with of Miss Julia was the one about the present/gift. Just wasn't enough substance there for me, but You may like it.

The Miss Julia novels are just good fun. As a slice of Southern life, you also get glimpses of and era, and manners and customs, that are unfamiliar to some and just like coming home to those who grew up and live in similar communities.

I liked the fact that I am involved in the story and don't want to stop reading until last page. Even then, I want to read more books.
