Illustrated by Joseph Pennell. The notes presented in this volume were gathered, as will easily be perceived, a number of years ago and on an expectation not at that time answered by the event, and were then published in the United States. The little book thus goes forth finally as the picture-book it was designed to be. Text and illustrations are, altogether and alike, things of the play of eye and hand and fancy-views, head-pieces, tail-pieces; through the artist’s work, doubtless, in a much higher degree than the author’s. But these are words enough on a minor point.
A Little Tour in France is a book of travel writing by American writer Henry James. Originally published under the title En Province in 1883–1884 as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly, the book recounts a six-week tour James made of many provincial towns in France, including Tours, Bourges, Nantes, Toulouse, Arles and several others. The first book publication was in 1884.
James begins his tour of the French countryside one rainy morning in mid-September of 1882, when he sets off for the city of Tours as a means of exploring the proposition that though France might be Paris, Paris was by no means France.

Henry James was a prolific American (and British, taking the nationality before he died) writer, known for his dense, rich prose, and long, sometimes convoluted descriptive passages. In particular, he preferred to "straddle" the Atlantic, focusing on the respective characteristics of Europeans and Americans which seemed to define and differentiate them. Henry James was born in New York City in 1843 James published his first story, 'A Tragedy of Error', in the Continental Monthly in 1864, when he was twenty years old. In 1876, he emigrated to London, where he remained for the vast majority of the rest of his life, becoming a British citizen in 1915. He conceived the book as a description of and even homage to the provinces. James had tried living in Paris before settling in London in 1876. He returned to France in 1882 to discover more of French provincial life than he had previously been able to see. Read on the Scribd mobile app.
