Thomas Pynchon's longest novel to date, Against the Day (2006), excited diverse and energetic opinions when it appeared on bookstore shelves nine years after the critically acclaimed Mason & Dixon. Its wide-ranging plot covers nearly three decades—from the 1893 World's Fair to the years just after World War I—and follows hundreds of characters within its 1085 pages. The book’s eleven essays by established luminaries and emerging voices in the field of Pynchon criticism, address a significant aspect of the novel's manifold interests. By focusing on three major thematic trajectories (the novel's narrative strategies; its commentary on science, belief, and faith; and its views on politics and economics), the contributors contend that Against the Day is not only a major addition to Pynchon's already impressive body of work, but also a defining moment in the emergence of twenty-first century American literature.

I advise potential readers ignore the malicious first Amazon review of this book. Contrary to what that review suggests, it is not a doctoral dissertation but rather a multi-author anthology, thematically organized into sections including one on political and ideological readings of the novel. Early chapter by Brian McHale is certainly worthy, as are many of the more specific pieces that follow. Plenty of helpful background information on ATD's historical, scientific, and cultural allusions, including an entire article about Nikolai Tesla, who is of course prominently featured in the novel. Sad to think someone gets well enough acquainted with the Mighty TP, only to unfairly badmouth an interesting and potentially valuable contribution to Pynchon scholarship. Bon appetit, Brigadier Pudding!

Highly recommended. Strong insight into the novel's take on the relationship between faith and politics. A strong addition to the critical Pynchon canon.

if you want to get a doctorate in english literature, you have to pick an author. if you picked shakespeare or joyce, you have to really smart. to pick gravity's rainbow, you didn't have to know anything. the editor of the book bragged that he couldn't get past the first fourth of it. to charge $80 for this book means they expect to sell maybe 3 copies and it doesn't matter because i'm sure this guy will find a position. this is why i quit the humaniteis and learned something real and lead a professional socially responsible life. sorry, i am certain that this book is shallow and trivial. i have spent almost since it came out trying to tease it out. and i keep discovering how i have short-changed pynchon. plus, we know the dead duck was killed back in mason and dixon, and he clearly didn't catch that.
