User reviews
This novel was originally published by Berkley paperbacks in 1989. I have a MINT condition signed paperback and advance reading copy of this novel. It was published at the tail-end of the Horror Boom of the 1980s and was an instant classic. There were numerous reviews praising this novel upon publication. I have been keeping an eye out hoping this book would get re-published as an e-book and it is finally here. I am buying the e-book to re-read this gem of a horror novel. I am also getting another re-published e-book from this author titled The Fire Within - massive size horror novel that I did not have the opportunity to read when it was first published in 1991 - but thanks to e-books I can now.
When Professor Elliot Collins sees pictures of beautiful Nikki he becomes obsessed. You will too. Hard to put down, with haunting characters and vivid descriptions, I read it twice!
If you like Castaneda and are not afraid to go on a mind-bending trip this series is for you. It's a lot of fun reading about the 60s from an 80s perspective too!
This is the first of Graham Watkins books to be republished in Kindle format and one that I hadn't read before. It's set in the 1970s and is full of the sights, sounds and events of that time - think Jefferson Airplane, The Beatles, Vietnam War and drug use.

The author clearly has a deep knowledge of Mesoamerican culture and history, and this comes through very well in the story. The concepts are introduced naturally as they occur, without cumbersome exposition, leaving the reader wanting to know more and heightening the sense of creeping, ancient evil - for some reason the 70s setting works particularly well in this respect. The `nagual', the animal counterpart to which one's life force is linked and the book's alternate title, is particularly well-explained and put to good use in the story as the central character is slowly drawn in deeper towards the book's dramatic conclusion.

The story flows well and the author's prose style makes for an easy and engrossing read. Will definitely read the rest in the series.
The era of 1965-70 is well captured in book. This is very good horror book and it is sad that the auther is not popular. first read this and then read 'fire within'- anoter masterpiece by same auther. They are kind of - "not sequel but good to read in that order" type of books. read another author - Allen Lee Harris- as good as peter straub. - ' deliver us from devil' and 'let there be dark'
