From Publishers Weekly. The bad news is that McCutchan's latest Halfhyde book ( The Last Farewell ) offers minimal seamanship; the good news is that even though his humor lacks some of its usual bite, he provides a high old time puncturing late Victorian mores.

As the age of the sailing ship is drawing to a close, Lieutenant St. Vincent Halfhyde takes on the task of transporting to Chile a vain foreign officer, a meek Church cleric, a bombastic widow, and an uptight Scotland Yard inspector. The admiral of the tale is a querulous British loudmouth now in service with the Chileans. Particularly delightful is Scott's rendition of Caroline Penn, Halfhyde's irrepressible Aussie mistress.

McCutchan provides a look at the concerns of a wide range of personnel aboard Kemp's tanker Coverdale, all of whom are galvanized into action when a Nazi raider and a U-boat pack appear.
