Why this book did not come to the attention of those who award prizes to authors for a first novel is a mystery to me.
I found it by chance and read it in two sections. I would have read it in one, however it literally took my breath away.
It remained so detailed and true to the time of the war, bringing the characters to life so clearly that I felt I was there.

I can imagine all the research that went into this book and I applaud Mr Lourie's skill and style in creating such a page turner packed with twists and turns that will surprise you. Historical/fiction novels such as this gave me important insights into the people of Germany who lived through the war

Special things are very few and this is one of them. I hope the author writes another book
