The U.S. Army didn't quite know what to do with Captain John Early. But he would never consider mustering out. So the army's plan was to get him out of the way. They assigned him to camp Sheridan - to protect the same Indians he'd been fighting all his life. It was a job they thought no one could handle, and Early was a man they could afford to lose. They just didn't know how good a soldier they'd created. Because Captain John Early would indeed protect his charges - even from the army itself.

Will Cook, Wade Everett, James Keene and Frank Peace were one author. You can't find most of his work on Kindle though I did find a few of his books published after his death under the pseudonym Wade Everett in the kindle library. I have all of his novels, in paperback and a few in hard cover that I had to search to find and I re-read them quite often. The Warrior is one of my favorites. It is a great story of a hero that the Cavalry just can't get rid of despite his career threatening wounds. The story of how, at the end of the Indian wars, a small band of military rejects, find a place for themselves while protecting the Indians that they had fought for so long, is a great tale. Will Cook is an unappreciated talent, mainly I believe because he died so early, but his works were a match, and in some ways superior to Zane Grey or Louis L'Amour though he only published novels from the mid fifties to his death in 1963. Had he lived he would have out shined most other western authors.

WE has written of the time period shortly after the Indian Wars end. The Indian tribes are assigned reservations with the promised of cattle and other food stuff. The Crooked Indian Agents and their US Army partners are stealing the Indian's food supp!y. Numerous high ranking Army Officers and Senators are involved. A hearing is held and corrective actions were taken. This is an excellent read of the genre.....ER

I read some books by the author back in the '60's-70's and was impressed. This book is less about the West than it is about the importance of doing the right thing even when it is likely to impose a very heavy cost for doing so. I am glad that I bought it.

Not sure what I expected this to be, but was pleasantly surprised. I used to live close to the Oneida Indian Reservation and was aware of their awful trek from New York to Wisconsin but this described vividly the conditions and problems we should all know about.

Ok, this was pretty good in that nothing in the storyline is predictable. The author developed the characters in this story but that was no guarantee that they would be around at the end. A fun read!
