In the end I am uncertain what to really make of Torgny Lindgren’s work.

Eventually Marklund meets Goatee in Stockholm who is an art forger and he has an absolutely perfect copy he’s made of the Madonna (as well as many other famous art works) and he simply GIVES Marklund his copy so that he has the painting again, the supposed original still hanging in the tax office. In the end I am uncertain what to really make of Torgny Lindgren’s work. He had a great advantage with me, he is preaching to the choir, arguing a position to which I am already committed.

Swedish title: Till sanningens lov. Translated by Tom Geddes. In Praise of Truth is narrated by Theodore Marklund, a picture framer who discovers a painting at a country auction that he is sure is by renowned Swedish painter Nils de Dardel. He scrapes together every last crown and öre his family has been saving for generations (and borrows a bit too) and while he gets into a bidding war with another man (whom he believes he tipped too much of his hand to) he gets the goods, a Madonna picture that turns out to be even more than he had hoped for, a triptych.

Theodore was the twelfth of thirteen children (the ninth of the ten surviving). The popular songwriter Paul Dresser (1859–1906) was his older brother. From 1889 – 1890, Theodore attended Indiana University before flunking out It seemed to spring from the fact that almost every young person was possessed of an ingrown ambition to be somebody financially and socially . it was not always possible to drop the first girl.

Along with praise, children need prestige and responsibility. In fact, we all need to feel that we're special, unique, worth something.

One sunny summer afternoon, my wife and I were sitting in the garden with two friends. Their six-year-old son behaved remarkably well playing quietly with his toys. Along with praise, children need prestige and responsibility.

A forgery is a copy that is fraudulently passed off as the original. True or false? Lindgren's forger "simply creates freedom. Freedom from certainties and markets and the authorities. What are called forgeries," he says, "are the only true expression of our age."Marklund the picture-framer sinks all his savings into a Madonna by Dardel, the Swedish artist's masterwork. Suddenly the picture makes a duplicate appearance, in the studio of the man with the goatee beard; and the tax authorities confiscate the original; and the sitter's son turns up asserting it is stolen property; and Marklund's ex-girlfriend claims a half-share.Marklund's childhood friend Ingela, meanwhile, has learnt to sing and is taken up by an impresario who launches her career as Paula, Sweden's biggest name in pop. But is she too a forgery - if not in the eyes of her plastic-surgeon lover, then in those of the press who "created" her?Recounting this burlesque adventure of the two young innocents at odds with contemporary values, Torgny Lindgren has once again achieved a perfect tale for our times, ironic, profound, many-layered and utterly enjoyable.

The more we as social animals alienate ourselves or are alienated from the world through removal from the production process (Marx), as we live our lives through the next episode of Big Brother or the Bold and the Beautiful, as we define ourselves through fashion or possessions, then the further we drift away from our authentic selves - shades of D.H. Lawrence! Our relationships become defined by money - in the book IN PRAISE OF TRUTH three generations defy that trend by confining money to a black wooden box, its contents ultimately used in exchange for a single work of art whose subject is the Madonna. Under triumphant Capitalism our desires are monitored and fostered by envy - in the book IN PRAISE OF TRUTH the anti-hero's life long love Paula is the love object of her plastic surgeon who is able to "create a structure" in his busy married life "that also left space for her" and where he could dispose of his seed three times a week and our anti-hero asks whether this could be a more frequent occurrence as Paula is often restless!

The anti-hero, Marklund - who constantly surprises with his observations, his absence of the seven deadly sins, his obsession with the power of art to infuse life with meaning - is reminiscent of Billy Budd. He seems untainted by sin who does not understand the ways of modern living. He understands nothing he exclaims, including himself. He admits however, that he may have underestimated life and overestimated art. He frequently refers to his favourite book The Guinness Book of Records which stands for, one presumes, the varieties of bizarre human behaviour. He and Paula, his one true love, laugh over it breathing garlic fumes over each other - these touches, their garlic breaths, add a kind of authenticity to the reality of their lives. Or the illusion of their existence?

Continually surprising, this novel captivates the reader with its quirky humour whilst

questioning modern life as we, most of us, live it. Art, illusion, the art market, the copy, love, desire, the art of celebrity, the marketing of talent, consumerism, insecurity and more, pepper this lovely work. A joy of a read.

The story of a simple humble picture framer in a generational shop that collects Art and cultivates knowledge in the Arts gives one an initial sense of relief that belief in the Arts can be so simple true and absolute. Philisophy and concepts are worthy references to Art are references to high culture these alone make the book a joy. About 3/4 of the way through the book what is simple and wholesome becomes so disfunctional that the story turns into a dark comedy of unsuual phychology and complications. The book ends with a generational religious statement from the narrators grandfather and all is well. You will enjoy this unusually simple and complex book.
