There was a large sign directly opposite her that read: NO SMOKING, but the notice was roundly ignored. The injured mixed with those who’d accompanied them. There were wailing infants and toddlers, battered drunks, others clutching a towel to a cut finger or slashed chin. Most stared blankly ahead, inured to the endless wait. Some were obviously sick, others even in pain. One rather well dressed man had his arm around his equally well dressed female companion. Hardcover: 311 pages. From Publishers Weekly. Cook's lack of ability as a stylist generally has been masked by his talent for fashioning a solid medical drama-often ripped from current headlines-that keeps readers turning pages. Unfortuately, that's. Unfortuately, that's not the case in his 12th novel (after Vital Signs), which has a plot so ludicrous that the weak characters and silly dialogue are all too obvious.

Every Robin Cook story is interesting and good reading. A lot of similar themes but none exactly the same, and the characters are personable. I just love the Laurie and Jack couple and have read most of their stories except this first one. does not disappoint.

I got this for my wife. She needed it for the series. The book wasn't in that great of conditions but it was priced fair. Oh, and she did enjoy the story itself.

Jack Stapleton dosen't make an appearance in this book. I didn't know that it was a series of books, glad I got book one first!

I have been a fan of Robin Cook on and off for a long time. Was looking for a good read and found this series. Can't wait to take on the next one.

It's been years since I read a Robin Cook story. Not much has changed but I did enjoy a story that was easy to read, interesting, and with a plot that was not difficult to follow. I will read the rest of the series.

It was the first in the Laurie Montgomery series, and was not the best of Robin Cook's books, but I found I only put it down, when I had to.

Great book. Really love all of Cook's medical mysteries. Glad all of these things did not happen on my watch!
As always, Dr. Cook has written a thrilling book that is imaginative but scary in the light of his medical knowledge. I was unable to put this book down!
