She Walks These Hills is another excellent book in the Appalachian series by Sharyn McCrumb. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 18 years ago. This book was my introduction to Sharyn McCrumb, and I'm definitely partial to the Appalacian series. She again combines two stories - one in the present and one in the past along with a pinch of a ghost story, culminating in an overall satisfying novel.

Tyler Is Not Here
Sharon McCrumb has a wonderful ability to weave multiple story lines, history, and the mystique of the ancient hills of Appalachia all into a beautiful and perfect novel. I love her Ballad books. This one is about journeys both physical and emotional. Her characters are so real that I feel I could just take a drive and meet them in person.

I've read a few of Sharyn McCrumb's novels, and I've liked this one, She Walks These Hills, the best. There are a few story lines going here--one is about an escaped convict with a brain disorder caused by alcohol. He's been in prison for 30 years and is looking for his family as they were 30 years ago.

Another is of a grad student trying to trace the route of a young woman kidnapped by Indians in the distant past. A third is about a woman who wants to become a deputy in the local sheriff's office, after having been the dispatcher. Her boyfriend, a deputy from the same office, does not like the idea, but the woman wants to better herself. The sheriff must decide whether to give her a chance.

Still another story line is about a radio disc jockey who has a phone-in talk show, and who is intrigued by the elderly convict and the reason he was sent to prison. All their stories intersect, and it makes for a very interesting read.

This is a charming story based on folk tales written by a very skilled author. Parts are very entertaining and amusing. I loved the descriptions of the behavior of the prisoner with Kosakoff's disorder with his perpetual amnesia and the hopelessly inept hiking professor.. I look forward to the next book in the Ballad series

Thanks for many hours immersed in the mountains of Tennessee. I love the recurring characters and the mix of an old mystery with a new mystery. The author always has insightful observations of human nature.

Many of the stories on which she builds her modern versions in the Ballad Novels are stories I grew up hearing from my grandparents in the mountains of Virginia and Carolina. Her characters are rich, the stories complex , and always, always , she demonstrates her respect for a way of life that seems to be passing . She Walks These Hills is no exception.
Another great ballad novel from Sharyn McCrumb. This story and the people were heart warming, interesting and a little sad. The history lesson was awesome ????
