Not since Jurassic Park has a novel so enthralled readers everywhere.

Nice science-fiction thriller with lots of adventure and a very interesting new point of view about human evolution. Highly recommended.

I picked up this book because I was an anthropology/archaeology major in college and have always found human evolution and the Neanderthal "enigma" to be interesting. Plus, it was on the sale rack. That said, I probably would not have paid full price for this book. There was an element of mystery to the novel - how has the group of Neanderthals survived into modern day, etc. That part was interesting. The character development was flimsy and the plot was mostly predictable. You know people are going to die (and which characters it'll be) well before anything actually happens to them. I definitely got the feeling that the book was being written with a movie script in mind. The author seemed to take the two stereotypes of Neanderthals and play them out here. You have one group that is savage and inhumane - very animalistic/simplistic. The other group is the idealized, peaceful, loving, accepting, vegetarian community. Only at the end does he portray some of the Neanderthals in less narrow black or white, good vs bad ways or as potentially very complex individuals who at least have the potential to feel deep emotion. Otherwise, they seem very devoid of the ability to feel beyond simple pain/grief, while they have the obvious ability, in this book, to think in complex ways. Darton's idea of Neanderthal communication was intriguing. He also ties up the end neatly. It was entertaining in some senses, but contained enough stereotypes and unrealized character development that I found myself wishing for more at the end of the book.

The basic premise of the book that ... well I won't get into that and spoil it but as the title suggests it is about the Neaderthal and the never ending search for that lost race of beings ...
It's one of those books that you can't put down because the action keeps on nailing home. It's easy to identify with the human characters as we try to undersand the OTHERS ...
It's well written, very descriptive and when it's supposed to scare you IT DOES ..
Have fun ....
