This one is not so much as 'Dead Even' as dead in the water. Unbelievable nonsense. Fortunately I paid very little for it.

This one is not so much as 'Dead Even' as dead in the water. Mr. John Frank Herbert.

Panting heavily from his exertion, he leaned against the door to catch his breath. He had used the chloroform again, just to be on the safe side. All that was left was binding them. t bother with tying his victims’ hands and feet-the rope around the neck had always been sufficient-but with the two of them, there wasn’t any sense taking chances. He entered the van and picked up the coil of rope from the passenger seat. His eyes went lazily over the two forms unconscious in the rear. A little chill of anticipation coursed through his body

I had never heard of author Emma Brookes but I really enjoyed the book "Dead Even". I'll try to find the book "Face Off". It is difficult to find a good mystery writer like Mary Higgens Clark, and I've read all her books, and now that I've read Emma Brookes, I hope she is a prolific writer.

Brad is up to his usual best. Every book Brad writes is better than the last. Just when you think you know where he is going with the plot he switches gears and adds a new twist. As usual his research is flawless this story will be impossible to put down. Perfect for a long plane ride. Good job Brad, I can't wait for your next one.
A very entertaining book from Brad Meltzer. The book is filled with excitement and mystery. The plot is complicated and the characters fully fleshed out. The book has a good pace and keeps the reader engaged all the way through. I really liked it and think you will too.
This is one of those books that you can’t put down, so don’t put it down! From trying to figure out who the good guys and the bad guys are to who "done it" Dead Even plays with your mind on every page. I said to my husband "we can’t eat yet something is going to happen I can feel it". Good luck and enjoy the book.
I've read a number of this author's stories, and this is definitely the darkest so far. A married couple is manipulated to the point that they separate. Good people get killed. It's not a fun book to read. Engaging, perhaps, but not what I'd call enjoyable.
The characters just did not act like real people. I am not going to give the story away but it took most of the book for the main characters to do what real people would have done in five minutes. The bad guys were just as ridiculous.
Husband and wife team, one is ADA, the other is working in big law firm. These educated lawyers acting like emotional teenagers. There dialogue are boring and long. Murder and mayhem, and who to trust or believe from the start to finish.
Ok, just when you think you've got it figured out, boom, things happen. Didn't like one of the likeable characters demise, and even though they were on the wrong side until..... Meltzer really keeps me on the edge.
This was a good story, but you do have to suspend reality a bit to enjoy the plot line. Being in law enforcement I was a bit too critical of the stretches. That being said, I did enjoy the read. The story does a great job of keeping the reader entertained and considering the possibilities if you two were faced with the same circumstances. I believe, that was probably the best part of this book, was placing yourself in the shoes of the lead characters and considering what would you do if you are facing the same life-changing event?
