Pointing dogs, sometimes called bird dogs, are a type of gundog typically used in finding game. Gundogs are traditionally divided into three classes: retrievers, flushing dogs, and pointing breeds. The name pointer comes from the dog's instinct to point, by stopping and aiming its muzzle towards game. This demonstrates to the hunter the location of their quarry and allows them to move into gun range. Pointers were selectively bred from dogs who had abundant pointing and backing instinct.

This is a very good overview of dog training for the first time hunting dog owner. It is comprehensive in that it covers training for pointing, flushing, and retrieving dogs from puppy through adult. The book gives covers nearly all common commands, drills, and training exercises from basic obedience to advanced drills (baseball, blind retrieves, etc).

The book could have provided more details about training drills with more illustrations, although there are some. I like the "correcting problems" sections, but that information could also be provided inline with the training exercises "If the dog does this, you do that." I see this book as mostly an intro and survey of gun dogs and training methods. A book like this is definitely needed, but I will need a more detailed book specific to the training methods of my breed.
