The West Highland White Terrier is a sturdy little dog with a deep chest and a slightly rectangular shape. Males are about 11 inches tall and typically weigh 15 to 22 pounds; females are roughly 10 inches tall and weigh 13 to 16 pounds. Unless, of course, you have a soft heart and fall prey to those pleading brown eyes - in which case your Westie, of either sex, could weigh at least twice the norm. The West Highland White Terrier is a bold, confident, fun-loving, intelligent dog who can find joy in the simplest pleasures of life, such as squeaky toys, a belly rub, and food.

West Highland white terriers are immediately identifiable by their dense, harsh white coats. These are fairly short coats but tough enough to push through brambles and harsh enough to shed dirt easily. The coat needs to be clipped or hand stripped to work out the dead undercoat. The white colour helped their guardians to see them in the fields and distinguish them from the prey they were hunting. Despite the white coat colour, these dogs are not albinos. They should have dark pigment around the eyes, mouth and nose. The ears are upright and the tail moderate in length and sturdy.

The West Highland White Terrier is one of several Terrier breeds hailing from Scotland; other related Scottish Terrier breeds that descended from the same ancestors include the: Scottish, Skye, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont Terriers. However, west highland terriers generally have very kind temperaments. As long as they are trained properly, the dog will be lovely. Also, the dog is good for people with asthma and/or allergies. they're quite sweet, but you cant gauge whether or not a dog will chase cats by their breed, at least not in my experience. my aunt used to have a westie who my dad nicknamed "the vicious little brute" because it always went for him. never anyone else though lol, just my dad. didn't like him i guess. com/question/index; ylt AtQcO55pjGXULdcYAm.

This 1998 book is a historical introduction to the West Highland White Terrier & is a reprint of the 1911 original by Holland Buckley, who was a turn-of-the-century canine expert. The history of the early Westie is very interesting for all lovers of the breed. There were many differences between today's Westie & the early Westie. This book tells the whole story of how & why they wanted to breed white dogs rather than the original brown; the early breeders; the first West Highland champions; the early sponsors of the dog--in fact the book is dedicated the Countess of Aberdeen who was a staunch supporter of the "little Highlander." As Buckley would say, "Breed them hardy, and breed them game, that they may ever uphold the reputation of their ancient home, the West Highlands of Scotland." As an added bonus, this book is a nice gift book with its plaid endpages & Westie bookmark! A 5 star gift!

I recently got my first West Highland White Terrier, "Cookie". I had never owned one before so I wanted find out more about them. This book by Holland Buckley seemed the perfect place to start. The historical value of this book is worth the price, but don't buy it thinking your getting a modern guide to the breed. This book tracks the history and early attitudes towards the dog. There are parts in the book about grooming and breeding but because this is simply a reprinting of an early 20th century publication, I wouldn't recommend it for such use. Overall it's a wonderful historical book on the Westie and I would recommend it for anyone who is new to the breed or wishes to know more about the breeds history.
