I have bought the last two editions of Myron's book. His book was the first that actually taught someone how to properly hang drywall, things to look out for, how to tape, as well as other things that most people that do drywall will come across. I found other books were not nearly as detailed and helpful. This video is essentially a condensed amalgamation of his book. It does not go into the minute detail that the book does, but it will definitely help a newcomer to the craft.

I consider taping to be an art form, not so much unlike a craftsman stone carver working away on the newest bust of the vain Caligula. Just like so few people can pick up a chisel and hammer and create a masterpiece sculpture, so too must the apprentice 'drywaller', practice faithfully to hone his craft. I have come miles from where I started just a few years ago. I hanged, taped, and finished a 24x24x12 garage using all 8' sheets. I would never dream of doing such a thing today. I am mostly the DIY type, having done a few side jobs for friends, as well as my own renovations. Where I live, skilled labour is extremely expensive, so I had to be self sufficient with all the trades, but I digress.

Thanks in part to Myron's books and this video, I can accurately estimate all materials needed for a job, check fastening points throughout each room to ensure I don't have any surprise loose ends from there being nowhere to screw the board, hang, tape, complete a level 5 finish on the walls and ceilings (which I did on my own house), texture ceilings, as well as being able to repair any hole or scratch in a wall.

Myron uses his brothers house as the exemplar. He explains virtually everything you would need to know to complete a drywall installation in a typical home of similiar size. As I said earlier, he does not go into the minutia of every conceivable scenario that one might find himself while taping, but I believe his instruction is really more than enough to get anyone started. He makes a point of giving you options where there are variations in materials and practices. He goes through each of them and explains their pro's and con's.

If there is one thing I would have liked to have seen more of, it is how Myron manipulates his 6" knife to grab the joint compound off of his trowel, spread it almost perfectly, and then does so again and again with such speed and precision. I have not been able to replicate him. He makes it look so easy and effortless. I suppose that comes with 30 years of experience.

I believe that we are all lifelong learners and even someone who has been in the trade for many years may find some value in watching this instructional video, certainly anyone new will get much more out of it.

I have been a regular reader of Fine Home Building Magazine for years and the Author of this book, Myron Ferguson has been featured many times of the years. I recently decided to take on a drywall project in a small room in my home, but have little experience actually hanging and finishing drywall. I'm also a perfectionist. Most things nobody in the world would notice, drive me nuts, so it had to be perfect. I purchased this book through Amazon and what a tremendous resource it proved to be. Admitedly, I didn't read it word for word, I used it as a reference as I progressed through my project. In the end it turned out beautifully and, although not 100% perfect, it is pretty darn close, close enough that nothing drives me nuts and pretty darn good for a novice drywaller. This book saved me $100's in the end. Thanks Myron.

This book is very attractive, with lots of pictures and appears to be well-organized. The problem is, a good bit of the book focuses on shallow descriptions of tools and things and very little emphasis on technique and practical applications of drywall, taping and mudding. The author spends tons of time and pages detailing every possible, obscure tool and "things the pros use" while dedicating a tiny amount of space to ACTUAL TECHNIQUES that will allow you do hang drywall that looks good. There are other important items of consideration that are left out altogether, including how to deal with warped studs and situations where you have to make drywall repairs. I was extremely disappointed after reading the entire book, to only pick up about a half-dozen basic tidbits of knowledge. There's no real "insider secrets" to doing certain repairs. You'd be better off watching DIY shows on television than reading this book. There's very little detail in specific approaches to handling certain types of hanging/taping/mudding situations.
