Tuberous Begonias: An Essential Guide. My other Begonia book was written as an introduction to the genus and served its purpose very well, but was not written with a view of the scientific nomenclature. The genus begonia is huge and can be divided up into over forty sections. Tuberous begonias grow from tubers, much like potatoes, and reach their peak in late summer and autumn. Most grow to 30–50cm tall, although some varieties can reach 80cm. They are divided into three major groups. They can be grown in both pots and the garden, although it's easier to manage them in pots. Position the plants with good light but no direct sun – a fernery, greenhouse, conservatory or protected porch is ideal.
