Karen Armstrong, bestselling author of A History of God, skillfully narrates this history of the Crusades with a view toward their profound and continuing. The book's basic thesisis that there is a strong connection between the Crusades from 1096 to 1300AD and the modern-day conflict between the Muslim, Jewishand Christian worlds today. The book makes this argument veryconvincingly and in a well-written, engaging style to boot.

I say that religion isn’t about believing things. It’s ethical alchemy. Karen Armstrong is one of the most provocative, original thinkers on the role of religion in the modern world. Armstrong is a former Roman Catholic nun who left a British convent to pursue a degree in modern literature at Oxford. She has written more than 20 books around the ideas of what Islam, Judaism and Christianity have in common, and around their effect on world events, including the magisterial A History of God and Holy War: The Crusades and Their Impact on Today’s World. Her latest book is The Bible: A Biography.

In 1095, with the tomb of Jesus still in the hands of infidels and the Byzantine empire overrun by Muslim Turks, Pope Urban II summoned Christian warriors to take up the cross and their swords against the Turks and then recover the holy city of Jerusalem from Islam. It was to be the first of the Crusades, a holy war that would focus the power of the European kingdoms against a common enemy devamı.

This re-assessment of the Crusades and the turmoil in the Middle East today attempts to untangle the web of misconceptions and prejudice that has distorted the subject and looks behind the legend at the facts of burning witches and heretics, the Spanish Inquisition and the massacre of inocents. The author also attempts to evaluate the effects of Christianity, Judaism and Islam shedding new light on the extraordinary power of religion on our history and on today's suffering in the Middle East.

Just read only introduction, but sure to make me to read soon after finishing what I am reading now. Thank you.

Ms. Armstrong has presented the other side of the story of the Middle East -- one that differs from the (Orthodox) position of Western Civilization historians. She has managed to put a human face on the Islamic civilizations that inhabited the Middle East prior to the Crusades and general westernization of the rest of the world.
Reading this book in light of the 11 September events, gives a new, and chilling, perspective on the nature of what is happening in the world. In one, almost prophetic, sentence she alludes to the potential for a Western-Islamic Cold war in the 21st Century.
I'm not sufficiently versed in all the aspects of scholarship in this area to know if hers is 100%, I do know that many of the current situations do seem to link back to events that shaped the nature of the Middle and Near-East to become what they are today. I did have my eyes opened, and can see her point of the "Three Sided" nature of the area.
Read this book if you want to get an insight to a view of the story that you will not get in the news today. Add the new information to what you read in this book and then draw your conclusions -- they may frighten you totally.

While Karen Armstrong's other works are entertainingly exhaustive in their scope, this book seems to drag under the weight of repeated contextualization between the time of the events covered and modernity. Time and again, Armstrong feels the need to tie what she is covering in every chapter with what was happening in the Middle East at the time of writing leading to what feels like a distraction from the topic at hand.

Altogether a good read though. Her ability to synthesize a number of different events into a linear storyline is impressive and her commitment to the study of spirituality, deity and history has always been a favorite topic of mine. I just wonder how differently this book would have been had there been less time spent on modern events rather than what is presented.

Armstrong's style of writing is very enjoyable. Unlike any other historical, academic or theological texts that I have read, This work by Armstrong exceed other writers, in that once you start reading it, you just can't put it away for long until you finished reading through the last chapter. I finished it in less than a week, it was very enjoyable reading.

About it's content, Armstrong is very fair in explaining the crusades from the Christian, Jewish and Islamic viewpoints. Her narration shows that she is not siding with any particular religion or belef, she managed to give fair insight to all sides involved. This is a truly good history book.

As a Muslim reader, she has my highest apreciation.
