The book Solid brief history of Louis XIV. Pierre Goubert came out of the French Annales School of history, a group of thinkers that wanted to use statistics, economics, and other social sciences to write "total histories" of their subjects. Typically, these subjects involved commoners and regular people, so Goubert's choice to write about a famous king is unusual for an Annales man. But Goubert makes a good point that kings and their people must be understood in relation to each other.

This book is great because it is not a biography of Louis XIV. Instead this book is a story of the nation of France under Louis XIV. It looks at everything that occurred during these years and puts them in the context of a national history. This book covers the social impacts of Louis' reign, the military and the economic. The author provides wonderful supporting details that you will find nowhere else. For example he talks at one point about how the economy improved and interest rates dropped during the brief peace between the Nine Years War and the War of the Spanish Succession. He talks in great detail about the famines that occurred during that time and other socio-economic problems. The book is not too long but goes into adequate detail about his topic. I highly recommend this book if you want to learn more about Louis' France.

This book is rather dated but is engagingly written. Its main drawback is that the author presumes considerable familiarity with the details of French history of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He also gets a little carried away with economic statistics. Still a good second source on the subject.
