This is a useful summary of Britain in the twentieth century. This little volume will be very useful for foreigners who would like to get a good grasp of modern Britian.

This is a useful summary of Britain in the twentieth century. Many authors would be tempted to narrow the study, and focus on political history alone. Kenneth Morgan, however, covers social history as well. Every chapter has a section on the arts, for example. Students would do well to begin with a careful study of this book, using it as a touchstone to compare other sources. If Morgan does not mention a subject, theme or event, it is probably not very important. Finally, the book is a good read. Morgan kept me interested from start to finish.

The book includes vivid examples, quotations from political speeches and other primary sources, and black-and-white illustrations, including reproductions of a few famous landmarks and paintings.

In this Very Short Introduction, Kenneth Morgan provides a wide-ranging thematic introduction to modern Australia, examining the main features of its history, geography and culture since the beginning of European settlement in New South Wales in 1788. It highlights the distinctive features of Australian life by placing contemporary developments in historical perspective, by paying attention to Australia's indigenous culture, and by making connections between Australia and the wider world. Morgan also balances his discussion of the successful growth of Australian institutions and democratic traditions with the struggles that occurred in the making of modern Australia--in other words, between the optimistic approach to life in the Antipodes and the more negative view of the "black armband tradition."

Jark
You can read the whole book in 30 minutes It gives you a nice armature to start hanging further information on, I was using it to come up to speed on Australian culture while taking a class on WWI.
Gogal
Very good brief reading for history. Not a tour guide book.
Arcanescar
This book is admirably concise and to the point. It gives a quick impartial overview of Australia's history. It is a bit dry, probably a natural result of being brief and to the point, so I only gave it 4 stars.
Yellow Judge
Much better written than other brief histories I have read. If you are traveling to Australia and want a quick overview of its history, I highly recommend it.
Yojin
Read like an encyclopedia entry. Deadly dull like a government report.

Excellent purchase experience.

A very good introduction; perhaps the only one.
This is the first title in the "Very Short Introductions" series that I've read, and I'm impressed. In a mere 128 pages, Kenneth Morgan introduces the reader to Australia history, geography, demography, politics, and culture. His approach is thematic, not strictly chronological. Inevitably, some chapters are stronger than others; I was most impressed by the material on European exploration and settlement, the development of Australia in the 19th century, and Australian government and found the chapter on social and cultural life somewhat choppy. Morgan's style is sleek and dense, but not dry. The book includes vivid examples, quotations from political speeches and other primary sources, and black-and-white illustrations, including reproductions of a few famous landmarks and paintings. Two historical maps, timeline, suggestions for further reading, index. This is a good quick read for someone who knows little or nothing about Australia.
