I feel that Long Tan is a chapter in Australia's War History, which should be taught to every high school student in the country. Students learn so much about the rest of the world's history, yet Long Tan was a fine moment for ADF Personnel, and for me, further cemented the ANZAC tradition. You'll note that some artillery support was from New Zealand Units, which contributed towards the success of the battle. This book should be on all high school reading lists across Australia.

McAulay's book was the first major study of the most important battle fought by Australian (and NZ) forces in the early years of the war in Vietnam, and it has several positive attributes and some limitations. The former are the result of how McAulay wrote his book and what he accomplishes through that process. The latter are due to in the most part to the book's original aims and, on reflection, the age of the book. It is also a good read.

The battle of Long Tan was fought over four hours in August 1966. A company of Anzac troops – 105 Australians and three New Zealanders – found themselves trapped in a rubber plantation, under attack by an estimated 2500 battle-hardened Vietnamese troops. When it was over, 18 Australians and about 500 Vietnamese were dead. And I wondered why no one had ever made a movie about it.
