I found this book at a used book store for $7. It is an incredible wealth of information of military structure and might up to the point it was published and even accurately summarizes future military needs. It not only is a great encyclopedia for military equipment, mostly of the Vietnam era, but it also has chapters on various government departments that effect the military. I learned a lot about the department of defense, legislative decision making, political concerns in war time, other military's of the world. I don't think you would even of see a book of this breadth published today. If you have an interest in what the US war machine really is, not in a political sense, but a real down to earth nuts and bolts sense, this is the book to get. It gives so much information and helps you easily understand the whole chain of command from the executive branch all the way down. It helps you understand basic strategy, etc. And back to the encyclopedic part.... the pictures and explanations of all the equipment is first rate. Almost entirely color photography. It's a large coffee table type book just packed full of fascinating information. My dad was always a war history buff and had books similar to this around the house. And I started collecting them myself at a fairly young age. And I would say out of the all the books vie read on military equipment and history, this would be my favorite. It has a host of well credentialed contributing authors. All books that deal with this kind of subject matter these days tend to have some kind of editorial slant one way or the other. This book does not. It's very factual period. A great great book. Highly recommended.
