The summer in discussion started in November 1965 and reached it's peak in January 1967 in Golden Gate Park at the Be-In that gave it too much publicity for it's own good and by the real summer of 1967 it was dying pretty darn fast (save for the media that was all over it for $$$) and when Greg Brady was.

The Summer of Love was a social phenomenon that occurred during the summer of 1967, when as many as 100,000 people, mostly young people sporting hippie fashions of dress and behavior, converged in San Francisco's neighborhood of Haight-Ashbury. More broadly, the Summer of Love encompassed the hippie music, drug, anti-war, and free-love scene throughout the American west coast, and as far away as New York City.

And with that, the Summer Of Love had officially begun. In Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band they embodied everything that the Summer Of Love is remembered for, while showing the world that it was possible for a band to take full control of their own destiny, creativity and desires. Later in the month, The Beatles were called upon to represent Britain on Our World, the world’s first live international satellite TV show, which also featured Pablo Picasso and Maria Callas. They also, in many ways, set another marker: the pop LPs as a form of art; it’s no coincidence that 1967 was the first year in which albums outsold singles.

Looking at the product description that is here I wonder if the company store has the same book that I am reviewing. "The Summer of Love" is a 184 page paperback book published by Celestial Arts in 1980 that was written and photographed by Gene Anthony and features a foreword from Beat poet Michael McClure and had a whopping pricetag of $9.99 over thirty years back.

The summer in discussion started in November 1965 and reached it's peak in January 1967 in Golden Gate Park at the Be-In that gave it too much publicity for it's own good and by the real summer of 1967 it was dying pretty darn fast (save for the media that was all over it for $$$) and when Greg Brady was showin'-off his love-beads and saying: "Groovy" on a bad TV show in 1970, the scene had been dead for years already.

This book of text and nice black and white photographs (almost 300 photos) is about the pre-tour bus Haight Ashbury daze of late 1965 through til early 1967 when it was a much more local scene of tripsters, hipsters, hustlers, runaways, cops, pranksters, diggers and many more not-normal people that all happened to find themselves in San Francisco together and being groovy. The photographs are the stars of this book with most of them not being a part of other volumes on this subject and there is a very young Bill Graham and a very high Jerry Garcia, a very green Hippie Hill, a very colorful bus named "Further" and a very mis-placed Beatle named George (not Chocolate) Harrison and his bride Patty out for a stroll.

There is a certain feel to this book that the mid-sixties in San Francisco was a place that was weird and wild and it could have only happened right where it did happen in the fog and misty days and nights that were filled with music and dancing that only stopped when this strange cast of characters crashed and found a little rest on somebody's floor in a hundred year-old Victorian house that maybe had a famous comix artist or a rock band in there as well.

This book is the work of a guy that lived in San Francisco and knew and understood just what was happening in his neighborhood and took the photographs to prove it was all real. This isn't Life Magazine and it can't be Rolling Stone (it wasn't in print yet) so this view is from the man on the street and everything is from that angle and in or (out) of focus for all to see.
I found this at a record collectors show in the 1990's and the author signed my copy.
