Noted frontier Western historian Robert Utley deserves praise for writing about the Lincoln County War, an all too often professionally neglected event of Western history. The Lincoln County War is typically the domain of amateur historians and Billy the Kid enthusiasts, not professional scholars. This has resulted in what you might call a less than scholarly tone surrounding the discourse about the conflict between the Dolan and McSween factions.

Utley's history of the Lincoln County war is absolutely superb. Well told, engaging, thoroughly researched. If you want to understand what happened with Billy the Kid and Charlie Bowdre and the enormous cast of characters who made up this truly tragic drama on the American frontier where there were no heroes, you must read Utley's High Noon in Lincoln. This is excellent scholarship and historical narration.

The book arrived on time and in new condition. The author provided facts about the subject event that were very interesting, as well as equally interesting facts about the post-war participants. A good read.

The best book I have seen on the Lincoln County War. Well written.

This is probably one of the most honest accounts of the events that happened. It has new information that I have not read before and presents it in a more historical way and yet is a very good read. I loved it,

Had to buy "High Noon" after reading Utley's other book "Billy The Kid - a short and violent life". Billy The Kid was a fantastically well researched and well written book, which I thought only proves that real life adventure can be more fantastic than any story I've read or movie I've watched on Billy's life. High Noon focuses more on the Lincoln County War and only includes The Kid as a minor player in the conflict. If you are looking for an in depth, well researched book that focuses on what caused the war and the intricacies of how it played out, you will not find a better read than this one.

The title of this book speaks for itself. The author tells the story of the land wars in Lincoln involving Billy the Kid. While more realism than fantasy in content, I found it difficult to follow. There were too many characters introduced - down the names of camp cooks - and the author used more of a adventure story tone than I am used to in historical texts. Still, the book is highly informative of the period, so feel free to delve into the wild west!

High Noon in Lincoln: Violence on the Western Frontier, is an amazing book. It gives an accurate account of what actually happened during the Lincoln County war based on historical evidence.
This is a much more objective look at the Lincoln County Wars than most other publications I have read. My family is from the area and we have an oral history that has never matched the popular history and media representations of this era. This book is closer to what I've heard from my family over the years.
