This book is primarily useful for its exhaustive listing of every fort that's ever existed in the United States
This book is primarily useful for its exhaustive listing of every fort that's ever existed in the United States. It is good for identifying obscure forts, and for straightening out the history of forts with several names over their existence. It is one of the better references for the existence of forts built prior to the War of 1812. The forts and camps cataloged in the Encylopedia begin with Colonial America and end with World War Two. The volume's emphasis is clearly on the older forts up through the Endicott and Taft periods Many of the older sites are obscure and thus explain the book's briefer verbiage for those places. Early stockades aside, coverage is not balanced for all fortifications.
