Author Marion Zimmer Bradley spends quite a great deal of her time with the novel exploring the universe, and that's just fine for me - it's a fascinating setting. We get to meet various members of the Unity and rough shades of what individual societies are like. The proto-felines are quite good with martial affairs and were the inventors of hyper-space travel. They used to joke that he provided the violence and she provided the sex-and certainly the detailed description of the Samurai sword didn't come from her.

Are you from one of the worlds of the Unity? Slaving is forbidden in any of the Unity star-systems, but the Mekhar ships do it anyway; it pays well enough for them to risk it. Dane said, I’m sorry. This is too much for me to take in.

The protagonist, Dane Marsh, is a lone wolf heroic type Zimmer wrote very well, along the lines of his character Roger Hogg in "The Hand of Tyr" (see GREYHAVEN).

Bradley is a great story teller. Riveting & engaging book. Hard to put it down between readings. This is a great example of well written SF. The plot line made me wonder if the Predator series of movies had taken their inspiration from her book since this is many years older.

This is a re-read. I bought the Kindle edition to replace the paperback I bought so many years ago that the pages are unreadable. I am _so_ happy that Paul is now credited as he should always have been, as his sister wanted him to be. Both of them are gone now and both are missed.

It is intriguing, for me anyway, to think who wrote what in this first known collaboration between the very fine and well-known Marion Zimmer Bradley and her brilliant but less well-known brother Paul Edwin Zimmer.

The main character, Dane Marsh, adventurer kidnapped by aliens while sailing alone, is the kind of adventurer that Paul would create. He's a restless soul, too venturesome for the modern world and, in the course of the adventure, he is very successful with the ladies.

The Union, much like the Star Trek federation, of civilized peoples and most of the characters from those worlds may be mostly Marion's. The piratical cat-people, the Mekhar, seem like something Paul would have done and both of them probably worked on the mysterious Hunters. At least that is how I see it.

And Paul wrote most of the action as Marion said that she asked him to do. He was a master of sword prose and his Dark Border books are among the best action fantasy books ever.

This is space-opera, with faster-than-light travel unexplained and a galaxy-spanning union of races, some descended from primates, others from cats, saurians and more. Suspending disbelief might be tough for hard-SF fen but everyone else should be fine with it. It is only to be expected. Marion's Darkover is far from hard SF and Paul wrote fantasy for the most part.

Hunters of the Red Moon . Good, old fashioned SciFi.

How have we forgotten about this novel? An why the heck has no one made this into a film? The plot could be ripped straight from a video game, even though Bradley wrote the story long before Atari. Or Pac-Man. Or Nintendo. Or Play Station. Or whatever your generation thinks of as the first "real" gaming system. The plot goes something like this. Random Earth Man is kidnapped by aliens to fight to the death on an alien planet against creatures that can assume any form. Man must choose alien allies and weapons wisely or die. Man must survive thirty days under constant attack to win riches and glory. Death, should it come, is graphic and bloody.

Because this is a decades-old novel, the writer wrote in a style no longer favored by readers. That includes techniques such as writing in complete sentences, using big words, and omitting gratuitous detail during sexual encounters. If you can accept that style, then you will love this story. If you can't, then you always have Manga.
