HAUNTED is the second book in Jessica Verday's THE HOLLOW series. It starts out with Abbey at her aunt's house. You can't read this one without first reading THE HOLLOW, though, I don't think. The writing is a little bit drawn out throughout the book, but it really picks up in the last few chapters. Verday does an amazing job of setting up the next book, THE HIDDEN. I am SO excited for that book, let me tell you. Don't think I can wait until September.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow I left my window open at home in case Caspian found my note, and I was pacing back and forth in front of it when his face suddenly appeared. I rushed over to him.

My daughter is not a reader. I told her that if she found just one book that it would open the flood gate and she would be a reading monster. Well, it happened!!! I am so proud and excited!!! She has earned money for this series, every single book except for the first one which I found at a local retail store. I read the description and took a chance. I bought it and she read it in less than 5 days!!! This was her first novel that she has read!!! She earned money for the rest. She is waiting on the forth book now. She went from never reading to reading each one of these in 5 days a piece. She almost cried when she thought the third was the last one. I highly suggest this whole series to anyone!!! I am getting ready to ready them all myself! Thanks to the author, many wishes to you and I hope my books will be great like yours!
I would like to give this book 4 1/2 stars versus five, because I gave the first book "The Hollows" five stars and this one isn't quite as good, in my opinion. It takes up with Abby almost ready to go back to her life after living with her aunt and being under care by a doctor for her mental problems. See she is started dating this boy, but he is really dead. That can't possibly be reality, right? Oh and to add to that she met the headless horseman and his wife from the famous book. Plus she was having a hard time coping with her best friend's death.

Don't be overwhelmed by the size of this book. It is an unbelievable page turner, even when dealing with the plot set up and characterizations rather then more action based scenes. I finished the entire thing in a few hours.

Caspian is more romantic here, and we really get to see more depth to his character. The two get a little mushy, and I admit to an eye-roll or two as we almost heading into "Twilight" cheesy scenes a time or two. Still it never gets quite that bad and I actually found the romance between Caspian and Abby to be more believable...(you know, once you forget he is a ghost). I enjoyed getting to know more about Caspian's past and what he does on a daily basis since these things were pretty much off limits in the last book. Abby is one of the most enjoyable teenagers I've read about. She has a good head on her shoulders. She works and tries to keep up in school and has a hobby she wants to turn into a profession. She has friends and spends time with them. She is a good yet realistic teenage girl.

Verday does a great job not only with writing believable characters but with dealing with the subject of grief in her stories. The first book was more involved in the grief, and had some beautiful, emotional scenes as Abby deals with Kristen's death. There is still some grief in this novel. Abby mourns not only for Kristen, but for Caspian as well, for the life he will never lead.

The mystery is more prominent in "The Haunted" as we learn more about what happened to Kristen and more about Shades. There are some interesting pieces to the puzzle for us to ponder as we wait until the next book releases. I have to say this cliffhanger was more intense than the first one. This will not be an easy wait.
Another heart pounding ending.

Abbey believes she's recovered from the pain of losing her best friend the year before. From the pain of having her heart broken by the boy of her dreams who can't possibly be real (he's a ghost a shade). He can't even exist can he?

As she returns from her great aunt's home to a bridge dedication in honor of her best friend. She also returns to parents who aren't sure if she's truly recoverd, chemistry that needs to be made up or she'll have to take it all over again, tutoring by Ben the boy who adored her friend and may like her (does she feel the same) hmm. And Caspian.

She's tries not to be drawn to him and he to her but they can't stay apart and as their love for each other continues to grow things start changing. For one there are some strange people in town and for Sleepy Hollow that's saying something. People who are asking her a lot of questions and some returning who have caused harm that is fully coming to light.

A truth is discovered as to why Caspian and Abbey are drawn to each other and also that more is to come if everything transpires as it should but will the one who set things in motion let it be.. Wait and see.

With a great cliff hanger ending and odds and ends of trust and acceptance thrown in I again can't wait for the sequel.
One of the best series I've read! I definitely recommend reading it! My only gripe is that I wish the story would have kept going...the ending was great, but I just liked the books so much that I wish there were more of them :)

I actually picked the third one up by chance, as I was trying to get my book total to a certain amount so I could use a coupon I had. I started to read it & loved it, but I realized this couldn't have been the first book, so I looked online & bought the first one. I loved that & bought the second one. To make a long story short, even though this series was an accidental find, I was pleasantly surprised & I am so glad it happened!

UPDATE: This review is for the whole trilogy, by the way. I did not realize that I was doing a review for just one book. I think the first one was good, & the second & third ones were great. This trilogy is definitely worth reading & even re-reading. I hope Verday writes more books like these.
I really enjoyed Jessica Verday's book The Haunted. Her first book of the series was OK. I loved the sleepy hollow theme and the characters were OK so I decided to go for book 2.

Much better! The thing that made me like this book the most are the characters. Abbey and Caspian are both much stronger more likable characters. As Abbey returns home to Sleepy Hollow their relationship definitely blossoms throughout the book to something more intense. Abbey's friendship with Ben also goes through some changes. I don't feel like much was really accomplished plot wise until the last couple of chapters but I enjoyed the writing and dialogue between Abbey and all of the other characters so much that I didn't seem to mind. The last few chapters give you a preview into what book 3 will be about and it sets up book three nicely. I really enjoyed this book and am now eagerly awaiting what Verday comes up with next.
