I'm a freshman in high school and Cracking the PSAT 2006 was one of two guides (the other being Kaplan) that I purchased in order to prepare for the PSAT. I started my preparation by taking the first practice test in Cracking the PSAT 2006, in order to diagnose my strong and weak points.

My first test results were pretty atrocious (or course this had nothing to do with the book because I hadn't learned the strategies yet):

Math-47 (out of 80)

Critical Reading-38 (out of 80)

Writing-51 (out of 80)

Total-136 (out of 240)

With a score about 14 or 15 points below average (150-151), I knew I needed to do some serious work. I studied Cracking the PSAT 2006 from front to back and then took the second test. All of my scores--except for math--improved dramatically.

Math-47 (4 point increase)

Critical Reading-49 (11 point increase)

Writing-65 (14 point increase)

Total-161 (25 point increase)

Though my score is not even close to where I want it to be by the time I take the test, a whole 25 points was added to my total scre because of this book (that's 250 points if converted to the SAT scoring system).

The subject matter in the preparation sections is accurate and lucid. They review core concepts (both easy, medium, and hard) and tricks you can do to avoid traps, and get the answer efficiently. Results wise, the writing section covered everything important for you to score well (as seen in my score increase), and the critical reading section gave good tips for sentence completions and passage-based reading. Math is the tricky one though; you really need to practice the information given by applying it, and I don't think that they give enough sample questions in that section.

To avoid the main problem that I had, I suggest buying an SAT math prep book (if you're solely practicing for the PSAT, you can skip the Algebra II) and just to practice as many questions as possible. Princeton Review, Kaplan, and Barron's all have them, I've heard that Kaplan's is the best.

Additionally, READ AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Though I didn't read that much when I was little (which may be one reason my comprehension level wasn't great), I read the New York Times daily, TIME Magazine, The New Yorker, and any other high-level reading magazines I can get my hands on. Books are also good, of course, but hard articles are actually going to be what you encounter on the PSAT and SAT, so magazines are the way to go.

Cracking the PSAT is my favorite of all the test prep methods. It is appropriate for all ability levels and is well written by intelligent people. I would like see more practice- two tests is not enough. Bought in conjunction with another book with additional practice would almost guarantee a higher score.
