Topics covered in the book represent a composite of evaluation practices and problem-solving approaches used throughout the world. Decision analysis methods apply to any type of business investment decision. The emphasis in this book is on quantitative methods useful in petroleum exploration decisions

The book provides useful explanations on how to perform fit for purpose interpretations of petrophysical data, with emphasis on what the interpreter needs and what is practically possible with real data. Readers are not limited to static reservoir properties for input to volumetrics, as the book also includes applications such as reservoir performance, seismic attribute, geo-mechanics, source rock characterization, and more.

The oil price crash of the mid-1980s caused professionals within oil companies and financial institutions to focus ever more closely on the economic evaluation and management of their oil and gas assets and ventures. Nowadays, the geoscientist and engineer cannot perform a purely technical evaluation without considering the commercial implications of a petroleum venture. This book serves as a teaching aid (with numerous case studies) and a reference text on basic theory and current practices in the economic evaluation of upstream oil and gas ventures around the world. The book works on two levels: from how to perform a simple project evaluation to exploring corporate finance in the petroleum industry from the viewpoint of oil companies and financial institutions. The concept of risk and how to integrate this parameter into economic analysis is also covered. Readers will hopefully be more enlightened and so make better contributions to their company's asset evaluation and decision-making.
