Treasured Memories and Tested Recipes. by National Council of Negro Women. Published August 1, 1994 by Wimmer Cookbooks.

The essence of the cookbook is that our grandmothers' recipes still meet the needs of gathering together. The authors preserved the tradition, by carefully substituted turkey bacon instead of using pork for example, to make traditional recipes healthier. Now we might further adjust a few ingredients, perhaps using olive oil instead of Crisco oil to reflect current dietary needs & nutritional advances. That is superficial, the essence is that we are learning together, eating together and advancing together.

I bought this book because I love the stories and fabulous recipes from Black families of today and the past. I have several of these cookbooks in my collection and the recipes cannot be beat! This is an outstanding cookbook and I was so excited about it that I made the "mistake" of showing it to a friend who just adored it. So what could I do but give it to her with my compliments? She was thrilled and I am so glad I was able to give her something that she will treasure for a lifetime. 'Guess it's about time to order another one for myself...

I really love this cookbook. It has real recipes for real soul food. I don't have to increase the seasonings like I have to with other cookbooks. This is just like the food my grandmother made.
Skillet
Nice recipes.
Jube
Delicious foods with mostly easy preps. "Words of wisdom" and thoughtful messages scattered through out pages. This book will become one of my favorites. I just ordered another to give a special niece.
Blackstalker
These are the best recipes ever. The sweet potato pie is just the best ever. Cannot live without the cookbook.

If you remember 1 smell, 1 taste or 1 conversation with your mother in the kitchen, then you need to get this book!!

Not only are the recipes all great and the memories of advice and antidotes are priceless.

These are Great Women, Great Moms and Great Recipes.

The book would be a wonderful read, even if there were no recipes!

This book should not just be read by African American ladies, but by all ladies. It will bring back memories and provide smiles for everyone.
