These strong childhood impressions of the Great Depression gave me the desire to document for all time the courage and grit displayed by families such as ours

These strong childhood impressions of the Great Depression gave me the desire to document for all time the courage and grit displayed by families such as ours. I was able to accomplish this by collecting the personal stories and memories of those who lived through it, and their recipes as well, because nourishing their families was the harshest challenges these women faced. Their creativity in meeting that challenge resulted in our most treasured 'comfort food' recipes today, many of which you'll find in this series of books

A third collection of additionalnostalgic, heartwarming stories contributed by survivors of the Great Depression

A third collection of additionalnostalgic, heartwarming stories contributed by survivors of the Great Depression. I didn't live through the Depression but my older sisters did. In addition, many of the stories and recipes I remember because that is what we experienced as I was growing up on a farm in upstate New York. This book brought back memories of stories I heard growing up, food we ate cooked in much the same fashion and even the games, stories and pastimes were similar. This is a "find" for those who enjoy history and cooking.

This book helps me realize how tough my parents had it during the Great Depression. My mother was very thrifty and careful with our family's resources for decades after the depression ended. This is not a gloomy book but a tribute to the strength and ingenuity of the human spirit. These Americans were tough and resilient. God bless them for enduring and emerging strong and self sufficient on the other side of this terrible time.

I didn't enjoy it as much as the other two I have. I am planning on getting the other two in the series. Some stories fine and some of the recipes. I would have like more stories of a more broader area and possibly very different states. I wonder what the recipes would have been in warmer climates.

This book gives me a sense of home my parents experienced growing up. As I read the short stories and try recipes, I am taken back to my grandmother's kitchen, a warm, welcoming place where I was one child loved and cared for. The recipe for a crust for meat pies is exceptional, and even my son enjoyed the glimpse of how things were. History is important because history repeats itself, and in these days of recession, you can find solace and hope.

I love this book! This book has stories from depression era, including old recipes. I actually found an old family recipe for raisin cookies that I had lost, so I was really excited to see it in the book. The book has the appearance of being "old" (but in excellent condition), if you like the vintage look. Good READ, and I'm sure the recipes will come in handy.
