Having had cocktails at many of the restaurants that the authors work for, I had to give this book a try.

The book is well-written, engaging, highly descriptive and gives a lot of insight into advanced mixology. I will gladly keep this book at my bar and recommend it to others, however, I almost certainly will never attempt to make any of the cocktails contained in the book. Every recipe in this book is far more complicated than I am willing to deal with, even for an excellent cocktail. From the absolutely essential but time and labor-intensive home-made syrups, bitters, and infusions to the highly obscure and hard-to-find alcoholic and fresh ingredients (platinum-grade leaf gelatin? mangosteen juice? creme de violette? cynar?), the recipes are just way too much trouble to make at home. The author does allude to this, stating in several cases that he would never make these cocktails individually but rather makes them in large batches then stores them.

Don't let that deter you though. The book is still very informative and will give you plenty of ideas for jazzing up the drinks that you do make, even though they may not be as complex as the ones in the book.

While I was vacationing in New Orleans last fall, I was talking with a bartender about my son who also bartends and he recommended this book for him. It has many different and unusual Craft Cocktail recipes. When my son opened it and was looking at it, he was already making plans on which ones to make- not only for where he works but also at home for his friends. Was a definite hit.

a great book full of interesting cocktails and witty writing, michaels does a fantastic job of putting together recipes and stories from an area i thought only was good for producing the coldest winters.

One of the photos in the book is the mislabeled with the wrong drink.
I've tried the recipe for the handsome devil, and it is delicious.

I live in the Twin Cities and aspire to someday eat at La Bella Vie, where the author works. I read about this book in the local paper and once I learned the book contains a recipe for drink called "Your Family is Insane (But I Love You Anyway)," I knew I had to buy the book for my BIL who "dabbles" in cocktail making and enjoys good humor. The book does not disappoint. Even if he never makes a cocktail in this book (which I think is unlikely), I know he will love it just for the author's witty commentary about working in a bar (including why he never keeps Red Bull on hand) and funny stories about the origins of some of the drink names.

The author expresses some concern that sharing his recipes might put him out of work. I don't think he has anything to worry about. Seeing the complicated nature of some of the recipes makes me more willing to shell out money for a fancy cocktail.

If you are looking for a good all-around cocktail book, you can't go wrong with this one. If you are looking for a gift for the cocktail snob on your wish list, ditto. This has enough recipes to keep a person occupied for a long time.

My only complaint about this book is that it does not contain a table of contents or index of drinks in it. So, when I went looking for the recipe for the above mentioned drink, I had to page through the entire thing to find it. I'm not sure why one wasn't included as it would seem to be a pretty basic feature in a cocktail book. That said, I still give the book 5 stars because it is that good. And, at least the drinks are arranged by the main spirit in it, so if you don't like gin, you can just go right to the section on vodka etc.

These are definitely not your run of the mill easy to make cocktails. There is some prep work required but it will pay off in the end. Made two drinks so far. Prince Albert (p.48) , which was pretty good and the TCG 1000 (p.94). My friends looked at me like I was crazy after telling them how I soaked cucumbers in tequila and how I made the black pepper syrup. After tasting the TCG 1000, they no longer thought I was crazy and kept asking me for a refill. It was simply one of the best tasting things I've (or my friends) have had in a long while. Basically take the best margarita you've ever had and top it. Can't wait to try more recipes, but that TCG 1000 will be tough to top...
