Doktor Sleepless is a monthly comic book series written by Warren Ellis with art by Ivan Rodriguez that is published by Avatar Press, launched in July 2007. The comic draws from a wide range of ideas – from futurism and transhumanism to corporatism and counter-culture. According to series writer Warren Ellis, Doktor Sleepless may be a man named John Reinhardt, a trust-fund baby and boy genius who is shunned by the counter-culture he helped found.

This Volume is a fun story with great artwork for any Warren Ellis fan! Unfortunately Vol.2 remains expensive, i'd advise grabbing Vol.1 while the price is still reasonable! It's a fun read! A cool tongue-in-cheek social commentary on post-information age dystopian society wherein the punk population after having arrived at "the future" is drowning in feelings of entitlement with the common cry of "where is my jet pack?!" Also, there is a twinge of HP Lovecraft sewn in. Can't really go wrong with Warren Ellis in my opinion!

I've been enjoying this collection of Doktor Sleepless quite a bit. There's a lot going on in the storyline so far, and there's a welcomed lack of black and white characters. Where's the story going to go? I don't know, but I do know that the mad scientist, his ever-attendant nurse, the Grinders, and the Shrieky Girls are all weighing on my mind now.

Super cool, a mad romp through a post-post cyberpunk wonderland, cut with just the right amount of nightmare. A book of wisdom for the inhabitants of tomorrow: "Today I stop being real."

Can not wait for the next volume, pure awesomeness. Pure Warren Ellis! would recommend highly to any fans of his or any grim sci-fi fan!

I had high hopes for this graphic novella, I really did. The cover art, the name of the main character, the idea of a cyberpunk Dr Frankenstein playing tricks on modern humanity all sucked me in. And in the first chapter -- with its mutilation bars, mysterious book shop, strange suicide, sexy vixens -- it seemed Doktor Sleepless was going to pay dividends. But then in Chapter 2 the mad scientist recalls his trip to the Amazon to find... magic. Like, what the heck? After that the story just slows down and goes nowhere, except on another subplot to the Himalayas to explain about Tibetan doppelgängers. The whole Gothic cyberpunk atmosphere gets flatter as the story wears on, probably because there is no discernible plot or real action, just lots of frames with talking heads, Doktor Sleepless ranting on a two-way radio and sexy bookish types talking about some obscure, re-edited philosophical tome. It's as if Ellis wanted to pen a super cool semi-philosophical comic in the European tradition but ran out of ideas after his Dr Sleepless-Frankenstein and nurse and just started posturing. And that's all the characters seem to do in this oeuvre: posture.

Ellis always shines when writing an episodic series for a longer title (NEXTWAVE, Fell, Global Frequency...) and this is no exception.

The thin story (crazy Doktor returns to futuristic hometown, does weird stuff to it) allows him to play with the wonderful, perverse, far-seeing ideas in his head, but within the form and structure of established characters.

The closest comparison to Doktor Sleepless is his work on Transmetropolitan - a vicious, anarchist protagonist strives to rearrange society with the tools at hand. And the good Doktor has many, many tools indeed.

Quality Ellis is like some sort of Lovecraftian manuscript - it may hurt your mind, even as it broadens it.

A celebration of all the mad scientists of Science Fiction, Doktor Sleepless is a marvelous satyric creation. Unlikely those other mad scientists he perfectly knows he's insane...brought to insanity by the banal eviness of ordinary life, by the bleakness of a future where technology dehumanizes men amd women.Ellis' Black humor is decidedly at its peak here, and zany inventions, crazy conundrums and vitriolic denunciations of society abound. But Doktor Sleepless has an assistant, Nurse Igor, who's as insane and as ruthless as him, beautiful and deadly. An acid trip served cold by Warren Ellis!
