His best friend, an old engine named Steamer, helps him through his fear. Little Chug's missing tooth and his expressions are perfectly child-like. The text is minimal and simple and the message is a nice one, encouraging the young reader to believe s/he can do things despite his/her fears.

Illustrations by Cindy Lindgren for a variety of paper goods and home decor. I illustrate in a graphic, clean line style with rich palettes inspired by the Midwest and with a nod to the Arts and Crafts Movement.

Other books by Astrid Lindgren. ay out at the end of a tiny little town was an old overgrown garden, and in the garden was an old house, and in the house lived Pippi Longstocking. She was nine years old, and she lived there all alone. She had no mother and no father, and that was of course very nice because there was no one to tell her to go to bed just when she was having the most fun, and no one who could make her take cod liver oil when she much preferred caramel candy.

ISBN 0785336427 - Manufactured in China. Age range not stated. Shaped board book, 10 pages. Published by Publications International Ltd. in 2000. No author named on book, illustrated by Jim Durk and Cindy Lindgren.

Little Chug, a young engine, gets his first chance to pull a line of boxcars but, when faced with a scary, long, dark tunnel, is afraid to go on. His best friend, an old engine named Steamer, helps him through his fear.

This is a very small shaped board book, perfect for taking along when you're out. The glossy pages are sturdy enough to withstand some abuse and wipe clean easily. The thick pages are easier for small fingers to handle than paper.

The illustrations are bright and colorful, and the faces on the engines are very reminiscent of Thomas the Tank Engine but more cartoon-ish. Little Chug's missing tooth and his expressions are perfectly child-like. The text is minimal and simple and the message is a nice one, encouraging the young reader to believe s/he can do things despite his/her fears.
