When I was younger I devoured every Encyclopedia Brown book I could get my hands on. I would read and re-read every one of them over and over again, enjoying the characters and the stories even though I already knew the solution to each mystery. Unfortunately, in a world of Reading Counts and Accelerate Reader programs, the constant re-reading of the same book over and over again that gave me the fluency I have today is no longer encouraged. Quantity of books is favored over quality and students judge a book not by the story that awaits inside but by the number of "points" that the story will give them.

Scotty, the party of eastern tourists rode the Texas range. The hotel manager had promised them Historic Scenes of the Old Wild West. Who knew what another mile might bring?

Scotty, the party of eastern tourists rode the Texas range. He rode last in line. Behind him came only the chuck wagon with the food. Around noon, even the chuck wagon passed him. Encyclopedia didn’t mind. Most of the tourists (including Encyclopedia) ate standing up. It made the boy detective mad to see his father sitting contentedly on the ground. I loved these as a kid and passed them on to my kids, and read them again as an adult. This book presents several 'cases' solved by the main character, Encyclopedia Brown. The neat thing is, unlike 'murder mysteries' in novels and on TV, it is actually possible to 'solve' these! You are given all the clues in the process of reading the chapter, then you try to solve the mystery yourself and go to the back to see if you got the correct answer.

These. Are. Fabulous. You won't be disappointed.

I remember reading these books when I was younger. At my older age now, some clues I get quickly, other clues I don't. These stories are good for young people to read to see if they can logically figure out what the truth is in the story. And always remember: Bugs Meany is a liar!
