Virginia Lee Burton won the Caldecott Medal in 1943 for her memorable picture book The Little House, a poignant story of a cute country cottage that becomes engulfed by the city that grows up around it. The house has an expressive face of windows and doors, and even the feelings of a person, so she’s sad when she’s surrounded by the dirty, noisy city’s hustle and bustle: She missed the field of daisies, and the apple trees dancing in the moonlight. Fortunately, there’s a happy ending, as the house is taken back to the country where she belongs.

It does have a longer story than most picture books, so I wouldn't recommend it to children who don't have the patience, and would rather have a few sentences: look at the pictures, and turn the page. This book contains four classic stories by Virginia Lee Burton in a single book, making it a great value. The text and pictures are reproduced beautifully, and the book seems just the right size -- not too big, but not a "miniature book" version either.

As anyone who has read these stories knows, they have a timeless nostalgia to them, and the lessons they teach will always be relevant.

Very happy with this purchase.

4 great stories in one volume. This is a great book to read to children. Mike Mulligan, Little House,Katy and Snowplow and a 4th about a trolley that I wasn't familiar with. My son loved these stories and the illustrations are wonderful. I've bought this book for several baby shower gifts.

Initially I was going to buy The Little House, but I came across this Virginia Lee Burton collection and I'm so glad I did. The book is a good size, seems durable enough (planning to give at Christmas), and includes other wonderful literary treasures by I recall reading as a child.

I agree with other reviewers that this is a must have title for any children's library. All four stories are beautiful. The illustrations are beautiful. There are some illustrations in this 4-story collection that do not appear in the single volume titles. Overall an excellent purchase.

My daughter asked for books instead of cards for her baby shower. I thought for a while about which book I wanted to get, and decided on this one because Katy and the Big Snow was one of my favorite books growing up and I know my grandson is going to love the Mike Mulligan stories. This is a beautiful version of four books in one.

We love this book. My kids (age 6 and 2) love Mike and MaryAnne and The Little House. All four books are so well written and beautifully illustrated. Timeless classics with so much learning hidden in them!!

I wanted to get mike mulligan for my friend for her baby shower. I found this instead that has 4 stories. They are all good. I was only familiar with mike mulligan and the little house. I didn't like the others quite as much but I think that is just because I didn't hear them when I was little. The book itself is very nice. I like how it includes the pictures from the pages at the beginning and end of the books that aren't in the story, since a lot of other books would have left them out when turning them into one big book like this.
I LOVE this collection of Virginia Lee Burton's timeless stories. I nanny for two little boys, and we read these again and again. The book is good-quality, the stories are wonderful, and the illustrations are mesmerizing!
