Among the boys at Macdonald Hall Mr. Sturgeon was notorious for his sternness, although to their parents he seemed a kind and understanding administrator who was fond of his students - he just never let them know it. The two boys strained for a better view. A crowd was beginning to gather around the Headmaster, who was still staring at the flag as though willing it to be the red Maple Leaf of Canada. Bruno jumped up from his spot at the window. Okay, everything’s in motion.

As they seem to be at the bottom of every prank at Macdonald Hall, the headmaster decides to separate roommates Bruno and Boots, but to little avail. Bruno and Boots are always in trouble. So the Headmaster, aka The Fish, separates them. Bruno must now room with the ghoulish Elmer Drimsdale. And boots is stuck with nerdy, preppy, paranoid George Wexford-Smyth III. This means war. Because Bruno and Boots are determined to get their old room, back, no matter what it takes.

Chapter 11 Congratulations, Boys Perry Elbert teetered into Dormitory 2, his arms piled high with books. Just in front of his own door, his shoe got caught in a hole in the carpet. Just in front of his own door, his shoe got caught in a hole in the carpet or with a thud, his dozen textbooks landing in twelve consecutive aftershocks. The door of room 201 burst open. Bruno emerged howling like a madman. What’s all the noise out here? Can’t a guy study? Don’t you have any consideration for other people? You can’t go around making such a racket in the halls!.

Hilarious first book from Gordon Korman. Korman obviously liked these two characters because he went on to write several more books based at Mcdonald Hall. Boots and Bruno are best friends at a boarding school and they are very creative about causing trouble. One person found this helpful.

I recently bought and read the scholastic version in order to reminisce about some of my favorite childhood reading. And woah, was this book really this short? Also I am sure they've made edits to this, as the older edition of this book I read 20 years ago featured George Wexton Smyth's teletype machine clack clack clacking at the break of dawn, and I am pretty sure did not feature cell phones anywhere. Who cares if the technology references are dated, I wanted to reread the original. :(

I loved this book when I read it in my youth and I just bought it for my kids. This book is hilarious and while pranks are played, no one is injured and all characters are shown to be multi-family. Even the stern principal has a sense of humor. This book made me laugh 30 years ago and still does. It is a timeless classic and a great way to get kids to read

Hilarious first book from Gordon Korman. Boots and Bruno are best friends at a boarding school and they are very creative about causing trouble. This book is silly and a little contrived and perfect for kids who like books that make them giggle! My kids are grown now but this one stays on my shelf for my grandkids!

Every writer and reader of YA fiction should read this book.  Not because it's the best book in Korman's long career, but because it's the first.  And he wrote it when he was twelve years old.  Many publishers publish books by kids because it's a great media bonanza -- Korman was one of the few child prodigies who turned out to be a prolific and talented writer.  In this first book he introduces Bruno and Boots, two smart alecky kids who get into loads of trouble through the course of the novel.  The plot is simple.  Bruno and Boots get into trouble.  Bruno and Boots find a clever way to get out of trouble.  But the fun is in the humour and the light-heartedness of the book.  Korman obviously liked these two characters because he went on to write several more books based at Mcdonald Hall.

This book is his first, and I think it's among his best! I wish the series were still in print in the US, but any you can snag are very good. Not exactly life-changing, but always lighthearted and hilarious.
