The book appeared in 1981, about the same time that the Bears' "First Time Books" were hitting their creative peak. Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia. They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art. It isn't as memorable as, say, The Messy Room, but my real beef is that it introduces a contradiction in the overarching Berenstain "universe" - This is a genial story about the Bear family's move from a damp cave in the woods to the iconic treehouse at the end of the sunny dirt road that reads briskly and acknowledges the worries that. cross any kids' mind when s/he moves to a new home.

The Berenstain Bears' Moving Day is the fourth book in the First Time Books series. It is also the prequel to The Berenstain Bears' New Baby, as the son is addressed as "Brother" instead of "Small Bear". The book tells that many years ago, when Brother Bear was an only child the bear family lived in a hillside cave halfway up Great Bear Mountain at the far edge of bear country. Prior to their current jobs, the Bears made their living differently

As the Bear family prepares to move to their new tree house in Bear Country, Brother Bear worries about liking their new dwelling and finding new friends

We are getting ready to move to a new house, and my 3 year old has not been handling it well. This book helped my son understand that moving is not so bad, and that all of his belongings and family will come with him. I highly suggest preparing young children prior to a move, as a big change is very stressful on little ones. The story is not as long as some of the other Bernstein Bears books, and is perfect for engaging my 3 year old.

Our family moved from the US to Europe when our son was 2.5 years old. I bought this book and read it to my son in the couple of months leading up to the move, and I think it had a positive impact on our move. Our son was engaged by the story, which was just on the leading edge of complexity for him. It addresses issues like liking where you live now but having reasons to move to a new place, what you'll take and what you'll leave behind (including material possessions and friends) and what it might be like in the new place. A year and a half later, we still read it on occasion, as it's definitely a good book for a 4 year old.

Cute book. I bought this book to help my three-year-old better understand our upcoming move. While the book does a good job explaining what "moving" is, I wish it would've done a better job addressing some of the feelings of fear, uncertainty, etc. that go along with it. The book does briefly touch on it, but not enough in my opinion. I probably wouldn't have purchased it had I had a chance to flip through this book in a store before purchasing. It's still cute, though, and you have to love the Berenstain Bears.

Bought to help my 6 year old son with our upcoming military PCS long-distance move. Very helpful and nice read. Talks about growing out of your old place and how you will miss it but points out all the benefits of moving to a new home.

We bought this for our 2 year old since we are moving and it is one of his favorite books! It had helped him understand all of the different stages of relocating. You can see the lightbulb go off in his head when we recite portions of the book to go along with our move.
The only thing that is a little strange is that brother bear's parents did not prepare him for the move - he's blind sighted.

**UPDATE**
3 years later this is still a favorite. It has helped the kids understand that you can still be friends with people after you move, but it's OK to make new friends. It is honest and realistic regarding feelings a child may have when moving.

I bought this for our Morning Basket to prepare our 2.5 yr old for an upcoming PCS. We both enjoyed it & he was fully engaged, talking about the moving truck, new house, etc. I referred back to the story when the movers were here & afterward, when my kiddo wanted to know where his bed & toys were. I like that the story touched on Brother Bear's concerns but painted the move in a positive light.

Good story for young children about moving, especially if they are already fond of the Berenstain Bears. In our young person's case, the moving truck did not exactly follow the family moving, but it is easy to explain that to a child (taking your moving truck longer because it has to go across the country, etc.). But this is a pretty good story about packing up, stuff going into a truck for the move, moving into new home, making new friends.
We LOVED having this book for our move. My daughter is 2.5 and we wanted something to help her process our move from CA to CO. This book helped tremendously. No negativity, like I saw in some other book reviews. Just a nice little book about moving. Highly recommend!
