The Summer Before did not disappoint. Martin seemed to slip back into the voices of the characters very easily. I only wish Ann M. Martin was creating more new Babysitters Club books as she definitely hasn't lost her touch.

Way back last summer, before sixth grade, I could have been one of those kids. But that changed as soon as sixth grade started, shortly before I got sick. Laine had gone away to summer camp in Maine for the month of August. When she'd retumed, she was different. Laine and I and one or two other girls from school used to meet up and walk to the park, laughing and talking and whispering secrets, often with a nanny or a parent hovering in the background. They'd felt like my sisters, those girls, which had been very satisfying for an only child. My best friend, Laine Cummings, was on her way to being crowned Her Royal Meanness.

It's been years since I've read a BSC book, and this one brought it all back. It takes place the summer before the original series began, and it explains how the BSC almost never became a club because of all the dynamic shifts with the friendships of Mary Anne, Claudia and Kristy. It also introduces Stacey into the mix, even though she's not yet a friend of the rest of the group.

I don't think the BSC series necessarily needed this prequel, but I found it interesting as I already started reading book #1 that this whole book is summed up in one long paragraph in the first chapter, like the story had already been written thirty years ago, just not published until 2010. And I found it really interesting that the book is careful not to give away any clues as to what year it really takes place in, keeping the series just as timeless as it has been.

Personally, I would have liked to see a fast forward instead of a prequel, because I cannot imagine what all of these characters are doing as adults, and I would be interested in finding out.

Obviously we're not talking literary classic here, but I'm 32 and read the first 60 or so BSC books when I was in 5th and 6th grade. It was really fun to revisit the series and remember those times. The characters are like old friends. There are no big surprises here; it's loyal to the characters and the tone of the series. I remember when I was an adolescent thinking that Ann M. Martin was very tuned in to my frame of mind, and I think kids that age benefit from reading her books, because the characters are all at once role models of responsible and well adjusted kids, but they're also fallible and relatable. It's also nice to hear from an adult author who understands your adolescent struggles.

I was a huge BSC/Ann M. Martin fan back in the day - and OK, I admit it, I still read the books today, when I just want to read something fun and lighthearted. There was something "magical" about the characters - obviously, as an almost-30-year-old (me) still reads them and I know I'm not alone!
This was a great tribute to the series, and a nice way to remember my childhood.
That being said - and I enjoyed this book, believe me - it's not my favorite book of the series. I don't think I could read it over and over as I can with, say, #91 or #77. (I can picture the titles and the book covers of those, mind you.) Yes the BSC spirit was captured and preserved in this book, but the story wasn't up to par with the others. I know a lot of those were ghost written, perhaps that's why.
Overall it's a great book for those of us who grew up with these girls. But if you're new to the series, I'd stick with the originals first.

I practically learned how to read by reading BSC books (including the Little Sister series) and I have quite the collection from the very first to the last along with the special editions. At one point in my life, I even had the movie memorized.

'The Summer Before' brings a great sense of nostalgia. Seeing Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia and Stacey again was such a treat, and the book remains true to the series in terms of their personalities and their individual story line. A must-read for any BSC lover.

I first discovered this series in the late 80's, when I was a kid.
When I ended junior high, I quit reading this series. In my late 20's, I found a copy of a BSC book (the Truth about Stacey) at Goodwill, bought it, reread it, and fell in love with the series all over again. I then bought every single book in the series, including the mysteries, specials, and super specials. Even the board games! When I found out that she had written another book, I ordered it right away. It's like coming home! I love this series.
Ms. Martin, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE write another book. I want to know what happened to Kristy, Claudia, Mary Anne, and Stacey in the future!!!! If you can do a prequel you can do a sequel!

This is an excellent story. I always wondered what happened the summer before Kristy's great idea for the baby-sitters club. What happens is that Kristy still has hopes that her father would come back to Connecticut and remarry Kristy's mom(her parents divorced a long time ago.). Mary Ann wants to show her father that she's responsible for her age. Claudia tries to search for the perfect boyfriend. Finally, Stacey and her parents are moving from New York City. If you want to know what happens, read the book to find out!
I honestly don't feel this book was necessary. Half of it was covered early on in the series and the rest was rather boring.
