My 2-year-old fell in love with this book when we checked it out from the library. We read it multiple times a day while we had it on loan. So I ordered her a copy. I bought the paperback and was disappointed to see that all the images are in black in white (the one we had from the library was in full color). It looks like the hard back is in color, and if I had known, I would have ordered the hard back. Just wanted to clue any potential buyers in to this difference. Such a wonderful story, darling illustrations.
My daughter fell in love with this book when she was about 18 months old and at 3 loves it just as much. It is about a father and his child and how he would love his child of he were a mouse, a kitten, a puppy, piglet, etc. and what he would do to show his love. The illustrations are very cute and the book is patterned well enough that your child will be able to interact with your storytelling quickly. I have ordered 3 paperback copies of this book to keep at home and the grandparents so she never has to be without. A special book to teach your child about love.

Edit 6/28/2014: My daughter is 17 and just graduated high school. I bought one more copy, to give her with her graduation card. Maybe I'll have grandkids one day, and I will absolutely buy this book for them, as well.
Funny duck
My granddaughter loves it too!
The copy I received was black and white photos which was disappointing, but the quality was decent.
This is just a sweet, tender book. Tomie DePaola fans will appreciate it even more. This is the updated version, which is in full color. Adorable.
My oldest daughter, who is now ten used to love this book. I just purchased it for our 3 year old son and he loves it too! Cute story and beautiful art work :)
A tender story of a boy who contemplates his love: The book is a sequence of short vignettes, each with a different animal. In the first, he imagines being a mouse and making a furry nest with another friendly mouse, nibbling on cheese together. At the story's conclusion his father describes the love he has for his boy.
Graham's accomplishment is to show the full range of love, and emphasize the complex and wondrous relationship between parent and child.
Almost 22 years ago this book was given to me when I was a baby, and it soon became my favorite book. My mother and I would read it nighlty. The book is about a parents love, "I love you Kitten, and if I were a cat..." I also loved that hidden on each page is the animal that will be on the next page. For Christmas this year I took a chance and ordered this book for my sons, who are 4 1/2 and 3, and it instantly became a favorite. My 3 year old has a hard time sitting through stories, but he will sit through this one, he even has it memorised. We have read this book at least once a night since it was purchased, my boys sometimes fight over who gets to chose "I love you mouse" as their bedtime story. This is a must have for ANY story collection, and a great book to say "I love you".
