Stranded by Ben Mikaelsen is a young adult fiction book about a Jr. Personally, I was not a fan of the book Stranded, by Ben Mikaelsen. I thought that it did have a few pretty good parts, but in the end, it was disappointing, based on his book Touching Spirit Bear, which was a great book. Stranded, I feel, didn't have enough characters to make the book more interesting, or more exciting parts.

Cole Matthews is angry. Angry, defiant, smug-in short, a bully. Ben Mikaelsen's depiction of a juvenile delinquent's metamorphosis into a caring, thinking individual is exciting and fascinating, if at times heavy-handed. Cole's nastiness and the vivid depictions of the lengths he must go to survive after the (equally vivid) attack by the bear are excruciating at times, but the concept of finding a way to heal a whole community when one individual wrongs another is compelling. Deep in the steamy jungles of Papua New Guinea, there's a WWII fighter plane named SECOND ACE that's been lost for years, a plane that Dylan's own grandfather barely escaped from with his life.

As with most of Ben Mikaelsen books, this one is a very good choice for teens. There is always an educational topic within the books of Mikaelsen. This one has a very strong female character.

Pretty consistent to the general themes of these books. Students enjoyed it (3rd grade gifted). Since these are West Coast students near the beach, it spoke to them.

The main character of this book was a girl named Koby who loved ocean. Koby meets lot of difficulties with her parents fighting and arguing over and over again. Koby is a girl that thinks that she is alone. In her mind she thinks everybody at her school hates her because she got into an accident that made her lose a right foot that had to be replaced by a wood in a form of a foot. She had many troubles along the way to the end by how she had a wooden foot. Koby lost her foot when she was eight years old but this story is about her when she is now twelve.

During the story she meets pilot whales. She tries to help the whales but she took very long time to earn their trust to help them. Koby couldn't leave them alone because they were badly hurt. The author wrote this story to express how hard and harsh it would be for a girl to live with a permanent space between her right foot and her shoe.

I thought this story was pretty well made how Koby dealt with pilot whales and her parents. The book made me think of my grandma on my dad's side because she lost her whole left knee down to her toes and now she's on an electric wheel chair. I liked how Koby never gave up on things during the story. I didn't like how Koby called her right wooden foot. I recommend this book for people who love whales and animals. So if you are even 1% interested in this book read the STRANDED!
I absolutely loved everything about this book--the plot, the setting, the writing, the characters--everything! I could not put it down once I started it. Koby is a preteen girl who has a lot on her plate: her parents just separated, she lost her leg in a car accident four years ago, and she feels like an outcast at school. But when she's out on the open ocean in her dinghy, she feels normal and whole again. Everything changes one night when she rescues two stranded pilot whales. As she spends time visiting and nursing the whales back to health, Koby begins to realize that whatever happens to her, she is strong, brave, and uniquely her.

I think most 5th-7th graders would really love this story. Koby is a perfectly written main character--she is engaging and relatable, and goes up against some very dangerous situations. The book as a whole is well-written and full of rich description and vocabulary. The supporting cast of characters (including the wonderful whales!) are well-developed and likeable. I highly recommend this adventure-filled and inviting story.
