This DVD would not work. I’m sad because I love Jolly Phonics!
This is the book I used to teach my child how to read. I didn't know how to teach him. He certainly didn't know how to read. Together, every night, we read 'Jolly Stories', sounded the words, traced the letters, and it all made beautiful sense.
In the book there are seven stories in total, carried by a group of characters: Snake, Bee, and Inky (a mouse). Each spread (two pages) introduces a different sound that is explored in the text. For example, the first story is called "Looking for sounds". It introduces the sound 'sss' and there are all kinds of 's' words in the text. Whenever a new sound is introduced the child is encouraged to sound it out, trace it on the page, make a gesture that signifies it, and read a couple of words that exemplify it. I found this approach much more complete than any other phonics system around, and it worked!
