by Katherine Folliot. Excerpt from Fairy Tales Who can tell how much of a mother's love and pride in her son gave her the courage to part with him, and to utter a farewell which cost her so much? N o doubt she already looked forward to a glorious future for her imaginative child, who most probably inherited from her the refined and poetic fancy which in after years made him so famous.

Iona Opie presents some classic fairy tales as they were ORIGINALLY written. Great book that has all the classic fairy tales in one place! This book gives an analysis of the fairy tales and their history before the actual story. Dark, lurid, mysterious, and pessimistic. The artwork littered throughout the pages is commendable even if it were its own title.

This review is for the book published by Canterbury Classics (August 1, 2017)

Well made book with super quality illustrations by W. H. Robinson, Harry Clarke, Arthur Rackham.
A treasure must have.
Other books (The Wind in the Willows, Peter Pan, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) by Canterbury Classics (2017) do not have the same quality as this one.
Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales is filled with stories from the master story teller himself. This book has a few stories that readers may recognize from their youth. It is a book geared for the older child to adult reader as the stories are on the somber side but gets one to think about the meaning of the story. If you are looking for stories such as The Ugly Duckling, Thumbalina, etc. you will not find it in them in this collection of stories.
It was still in its plastic and in great condition. I couldn't find it anywhere even at Barnes and Noble. Paid a bit more for it here but for me it was worth it. I love reading the original fairy tales that Disney movies are based off of and it's a beautiful book. Something I can read from to my children eventually.
I love Hans Christian Anderson's Fair Tales but it is in the original version and is not well suited to those unused to the formal language written so long ago. However, that said, it's great to read these stories and use them as a tell aloud to children. These stories have classic plots which lend themselves to today's world news. Just look at the Emperor's New Clothes!!
These are stories that are told, revised, changed up and retold in transformative works over and over. This is a good resource to go back to, when you the original, simple tellings.
It's such an amazing book. The only thing I hate is the glitter fall out from the pages. I could really do without the gold/glitter pages.

I grew up with the stories this author has written and I have shared these same stories with my kids. He is one of the best children's authors I have ever read. Awesome and children of this generation will like him too. He has covered all the bases of this generation by covering the fantasy, sci-fi, and more of the genres that children like to watch on tv and read.
