I got this book after reading and enjoying The Magic Nesting Doll which was also a collaboration between Jacqueline K. Ogburn and Laurel Long. My 5-year-old daughter and I love fairy tales, and are always on the look-out for interesting new titles and retellings of famous fairy tales. This is a retelling of the Grimm's fairy tale "The Singing, Springing Lark. The story also has elements, of "Beauty and the Beast", and "East of the Sun, West of the Moon.

I don't want to bore anyone with some story about why this book is important to me, but the thing is, I loved ocelots when I was in kindergarten and first grade (1990 and 1991). When browsing through the school library, I found Lancelot the Ocelot, and of course checked it out. My name was the only name on the check out card for weeks. It wasn't just the fact that the book was about an ocelot, but because of how sad the story was and how beautiful the artwork was on each page. That was almost 20 years ago. Recently I bought the book off here and scored a copy in great shape. I was a little worried that the book wouldn't be very good, and it was one of those pure nostalgia kinda things. Luckily, the book is still great.

Lancelot the Ocelot is a basic picture book with the story told in rhyme. Lancelot is kept in a cage at a small pet store, and he's depressed because he wants to be free, as all wild animals should be. I never quite got the full picture that the story gets across, but it's plain as day now. The author really gets it out there that Lancelot isn't happy and needs something more than a cage, or a pet store clerk that pets him every now and then. Ocelots are already sad looking animals, and in the illustrations, poor Lancelot is just plain miserable. There's one that's borderline comical because of how he's drawn, but it stresses the sadness. That's not to make it sound like this story is depressing- it ends happily, and makes for a nice story to read before bedtime. You can read it to your child(ren) in under 10 minutes easily while still giving them time to take in the gorgeous pictures. While this isn't an instant classic like Where the Wild Things Are or even the Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, Lancelot the Ocelot is a great book for any kids that love cats, colorful pictures, or might be sick of the kids books that are always trying to be goofy and witty, which is a trend I've noticed as of late.

It's a shame that the book hasn't been reissued again. It looks like the last time was in 1991 and it's been out of print since then. Make sure to get it when you can so this doesn't become a long lost book from the past that you might forget about for good later on.

Such a cute book, with a cute message. It made an excellent birthday present for my boyfriend Lancelot. It was really cute.

This book is a depressing but truthful way of telling what it is like for animals to live in captivety. So if your are ready for the truth I rcomend this book.
