Chapter 1. Trust me, I thought it was a non-contact sport, too. I glide through the water after a picture-perfect flip turn, the muscles in my arms and shoulders grateful for those two seconds of rest before my face bursts through the surface. With fifty meters to go and a comfortable lead, I could relax and cruise to the finish, but that’s just not me.

Father Julian, the priest at St. Veronica's Roman Catholic Church who proved himself invaluable in The Red Blazer Girls: The Ring of Rocamadour, hires the Red Blazer girls in this third title in the smart, charming series. Sophie St. James and her three best friends/classmates at St. Veronica's Catholic School on East 68th Street in Manhattan, now with several successful cases under their belts, agree to help Father Julian. He has inherited a painting supposedly by the famous modern artist Leonard Pomeroy -- and it will be worth a great deal only if he can prove it was painted before 1963, when Pomeroy died and his family unleashed a raft of Pomeroy forgeries on the world.

Meanwhile, Sophie St. Pierre along with Margaret Wrobel, Rebecca Chen, and Leigh Ann Jaimes get the chance to meet dreamy teen idol Nate Etan, star of No Reflections, a Twilight (The Twilight Saga)-like vampire series. But when Sophie ends up with Nate's dog Tilly in a dog-sitting chore, she thinks it's a dream come true. But will Tilly end up being a nightmare? And what about Nate?

Author Michael D. Beil, a teacher at a Catholic girl's school quite like St. Veronica's, wrote a book as good as the first in the series, "The Ring of Rocamadour," and much better than his sophomore effort, The Red Blazer Girls: The Vanishing Violin. All our old favorites are back: the eccentric, elderly Elizabeth Harriman and her beloved ex-husband Malcolm Chance; Rafael "Raf" Arocho, Sophie's love interest; the formidable Sister Bernadette, and even the wicked Olivia "Livvy" Klack, who may not be quite as wicked after all. We also get to meet some new characters: a sad artist named Gus; Nate Etan's foul-mouthed co-star, Cam Peterson; several of Father Julian's family members, and a nasty brother and sister duo from an art gallery. Whether a longtime fan or a reader new to the series, you won't find this novel a mistake!

Seventh graders Sophie, Rebecca, Margaret and Leigh Ann are earning a reputation --- for solving tough mysteries! And the Red Blazer Girls Detective Agency soon has a new client. Father Julian, the priest at their school, hires them to solve a mystery for his family. His parents own a supposedly valuable painting and are looking to sell it, but there's a good chance it might be a fake. The girls try to sort through all of the clues in order to prove the painting's value, but the situation soon explodes into something a lot more complicated. The Red Blazer Girls love a challenge, though, and dive in with all of their talents to solve the case.

Meanwhile, Sophie's father is a famous French chef, and one evening an equally famous movie star walks into his restaurant. Sophie begs her dad to get an autograph if the handsome Nate Etan returns for another dinner. Well, he does better than that, and gets the girls invited onto Nate's movie set for a day. When Nate's dog takes a liking to Sophie, Nate asks her if she could dog sit for a few days. She jumps at the chance, but soon learns that dog care is a bit harder than she anticipated. Dog sitting also results in the girls stumbling into yet another mysterious conundrum.

While all of the mystery business is playing out, Sophie has some confrontations with her nemesis, Livvy, who even breaks Sophie's nose. Livvy claims it was an accident, and Sophie thinks she believes that. Sophie is also beginning to think that there's more to Livvy than just meanness. When the two are tossed into a scary situation together, it forces them both to wonder if two enemies can actually become friends.

THE MISTAKEN MASTERPIECE is a work of art. This series continues to provide excitement and intrigue as the girls race after multiple mysteries. Michael D. Beil is a master at puns, puzzles and alliteration, and keeps the pages flying with surprising twists and a bit of sweet romance. He also approaches the topic of bigotry with a new character who proves to be very unlikable, but memorable in a haunting sort of way. This builds on the continual theme of cultural diversity in the series that started with the main characters being of varying ethnic backgrounds. Their friendship is a very special part of these novels; it's strong and contagious, and maybe even infects one who was once considered an enemy.

The Red Blazer Girls are clever, unique, thrilling and lots of fun. Fans can look forward to a fourth book with a Christmas theme.

Sophie is having a great time she's enjoying school, has her best sleuth friends close and has decided to join the swim team. Then BAM! Livvy accidentally breaks Sophie's nose during swim practice. She thinks things are looking up for her when she gets invited to meet THE hottest actor Nate Etan and he asks her to watch his dog for a couple of weeks...for money! Then, the dog turns out to be a menace and eats her shoes and valuable clues in their next problem solving adventure!
The next problem to solve: Father Julian has asked the girls to find out 1. Which signed baseball is the correct one and not a fake. 2. If a painting is really a masterpiece or a fake. Then, a third mystery is thrown in when Sophie begins receiving mysterious packages in the mail. And who is the strange man at the gallery that will not leave the building? And why is Raf acting so weird? And what is Livvy really up to?
The Red Blazer Girls series is so fun! It's got humor, drama and I keep learning new things while solving the mysteries along with the girls. Not only that but I think it's about time I make a trip to New York and visit this famous park this book keeps talking about! (oh, and the coffee treats and pizza sound drool-worthy as well)
My favorite part of this book was how they found out which baseball was the fake, I had my heart in my throat when they discovered the mess! (you gotta read it to find out *wink) "Oh NO he didn't!" was my verbal reaction.

I love this series, funny and I learned a few new things on the way.
