Last weekend, Shelley and I had the launch party for our latest book, Harness Horses, Bucking Broncos & Pit Ponies: A History of Horse Breeds. We held the event at the Writing Barn in South Austin and had loads of autumn snacks and horsey games and crafts for the kids. Best of all, we had seven miniature horses come for the kids to pet and feed watermelon to! They were there courtesy of Minis and Friends, a charitable organization that uses miniature horses as therapy animals.

Each person has his own way to approach drawing, and this technique may work for some. If it does, fine; if it doesn't, some young horse lovers may still enjoy trying it. I, however, was not impressed. I find it easier to simply look at a horse and draw lines--not shapes--for his neck and head and back and legs. I don't think the shapes make it easier to get the proportions right because the circles and triangles might be too big or too small. At the end of the instructions for each horse, the author tells the young artist to erase all the geometric shapes. But by that time he will have so many details that erasing only the original lines will be much easier said than done. If a child shows interest in this book, he should definitely be allowed to try it. But I'm not sure how helpful it will be.

This is a very nicely laid out book with large pictures and horses in different positions. But I have to take off a star because, & this isn't the first horse book I have seen it in, the author obviously has no clue how to ride a horse. There are 3 pictures with riders, & only the rider that is steeple chasing is in the correct position, with his hips over his ankles. There maybe some backyard riders that ride feet forward ready to fall backwards, but a knight would never ride in that position. Ridiculous. Also, the page where it says the horse is trotting, it is obviously cantering or galloping! But overall, a nice book on drawing horses.
