Tea with Demons represents a profound convergence of inclinations and ideas most present to me these days, clarifying in striking ways my interests in practices of everyday life, rituals, happenings, and play. It is exactly the book I needed to read at exactly the right time. It also felt familiar and comforting, entwined in memories of Shantigar, workshops with you and Emilie Conrad, our contemplative walks through the woods, and your Confessions and Conversation at La Mama. An inner journey along the path home.

I read this book many years ago, in the late 1980s. It says a lot about it that I still recall in vivid detail the frightening emotions and experiences the writer described in her characteristic way, as her mental state declined. Purely from the standpoint of the quality of the read offered, it is a definite absorbing page-turner that does not disappoint. It has been said that character development plays an important role in whether the reader is able to become thoroughly interested in a story. "Tea with Demons" involves such rich character development that one sees the world through Allen's eyes and can imagine how it must have felt for her to experience hallucinations during her episodes, seeing "sunglasses people" that did not exist and being unable to stop at red lights even though she knew it was a mistake.

From a psychological point of view it is a valuable contribution that a person could manage to take an experience of a time when reality was distorted and present it in a logical framework that one can not only learn from, but have sympathy for. However weak Allen's psychological state may have been at that one point in time, her personality comes through in her writing such that one finds a strong, admirable person. One wonders through the years after reading it how Allen fared in the future, and wishes her well, hoping that those demons at tea time have been banished for good or even replaced with a guardian angel.
