A Today Show Book Club selection, Raising Fences tells the story of a man whose youth was spent committing petty crimes, experimenting with sex, and developing a mortal fear of police. Out of that absence grew the desire to fulfill a dream that seemed almost a fantasy: to leave the streets behind, build a family, and become what he had wanted so badly-a good father. Moving past his self-destructive habits and taking responsibility for his mistakes wasn’t easy.

The dilemma of bringing a child into a hopeless, loveliness relationship was very well explained from a male standpoint. He explained to her many times. It also brought out that deception could always be involved situations where one person is selfish and controlling. A child's welfare must be first and foremost and wanted in any relationship. Not an instrument to control and drain the other person of financial and emotional resources. Camille gave up on herself and had nothing to bring to the table.

This book kept me captivated from beginning to end. It is full of truth, honesty, beauty, anger, peace and love. Mr. Datcher is brutally honest in every line, and how he weaves the story of his growing up and coming of age parallel with his telling of his experiences as an adult and a college student is brilliant. He expresses being afraid durinig certain situations, both when he was a child and as an adult. He also expresses the deepest love through the poem that he wrote to propose to his wife. These two emotions expressed so truthfully and honestly makes him one of the most beautiful men I have never met, but have been afforded the privilege to travel with him through the pages of this beautiful book. It is a wonderful piece of writing, and I thoroughly enjoyed every word of it.

If like me you are a woman and have always wanted to know about the thought process of a blk man then this is the book for you. M. Datcher does a great job of navigating us through his mind and life. Great read and an important read especially for the women out there playing that trifiling baby daddy game.
